    Beetradex update

There are two companies offering wax exchange this year, unfortunately we could not bring in a new wax exchange deal this year but hope to have it sorted for next year. At this time in the ticket sale program we have exceeded the numbers achieved in previous years, looks like being a verry busy...

    Requeening my bees from hell

As nasty as they are if you try to requeen too early you will get a badly mated queen and then a terrible season of one disaster to another while trying to sort it out. When you requeen be ruthless, break it down to 3 or even four nucs is it’s a strong 10 frame by the end of May. You can always...

How to encourage the Queen to lay male bees?

First, I should say I think drone culling is the worst of all the practices some beekeepers use, it definitely affects the balance and mating of queens in a much wider area than the apiaries in the immediate location. My queen rearing is based around 30 colonies, dedicating 10 of the very best...

How to encourage the Queen to lay male bees?

Verry difficult to achieve what you need from just 4 hives. Some of the problems are:- First job is to get the varroa levels as low as possible, they breed exponentially in drone brood. For virtually 40 days you will need to add frames of emerging brood to the drone raisers, depleting other...

Moving a colony into a new hive.

I may have missed something having only scanned the posts, But, if you are going to install standard national frames in a 12 x 14 cavity you are going to get an awful lot of drone and consequently a lot of varroa !

    Buying individual hive parts?

OI don't think anyone would be able to supply that piece, unless you can trace the original manufacturer then the shipping and special item cost would come into play, just buy a new one, they are reasonably priced.

What insurance options are out there?

Check your household insurance, most hobby beekeepers are covered, if not ask them. It should work out cheaper. You may also want to ask yourself what you need insurance for ?

    Am I losing a colony

Its not so much about saving a dwindling colony, although if it is size issue and nothing else is wrong then a styrene nuc box may be helpful. My concern would be a dwindling hive with a virus, as the hive gets smaller and the weather warmer you could inadvertently set up perfect robbing...

    Am I losing a colony

On a warm day when the bees are flying take a look. You could do something to save it. Of course is one is in Scotland and one in Kent you may want to take a view on it. Don't get bogged down with the time of year, or the idea that you have to be able to go to the bees in shirt sleeves, its a...

    Am I losing a colony

Regardless of all the guessing it is impossible to tell what’s going on without looking at the bees. No matter what you have been told, on the day the good hive is flying open the one you think has a problem and have a look, take a photo if you can, post on this site and someone will hopefully...

    Pollen patties

Many years ago now, probably 15 I used started to use Ultra Bee, I always add one to the hive 1st March, the queen is laying and needs a little help sometimes before the trees start to yield pollen. I know Bee farmers who use the dry and make patties with syrup.
