No honey show this year .............for us its all online.

We want to post to Ireland in general but the NI protocol was proving difficult for our shippers to navigate, we keep looking at it and asking. Some time soon it will have to be put right.

Wood is proving a problem worldwide, most wood costs have increased by 15% or so, on top of that shipping containers have quadrupled in price, our container imports last year were 5% of the goods in the container a 40’ HC are around £100K with a shipping cost of 5K, that 5K is now 20K, We do not...

    Basic supplies

It depends who you buy from, if the pre drilling is done on a 5 axis CNC you will get a perfect fit, if the supplier then supplies ring shank nails to do the job properly end grain nailing is as strong as you can get, you will not see the split wood as in your photos, this will allow water...

    Basic supplies

Seconds are a good buy, Western red cedar prices are going through the roof so the earlier you can buy the better, if the knots are loose send them back, the best ones come pre drilled so no fuss when nailing, English cedar has more knots generally and the wood doesn’t machine so well but the...

Would a colony survive winter in a half nuc?

We should re-evaluate the use of open mesh floors in general , they accumulate more rubbish than a solid floor would. The bees can clean a solid floor, with the mesh floor they cannot get to the rubbish to clear it out, wax moths ideal environment.

Would a colony survive winter in a half nuc?

Yes it will work if you set it up well, the only time I failed to overwinter a queen was in an apidea, I tried everything, putting them in a brood box in the apidea, extra feeders on top, for years I got so frustrated with it I gave up in the end and used a 3 frame nuc, I think it’s the balance...

    Too late to Merge?

There is no temperature when should not open your hive if you are reasonably sure something is going wrong, cluster separation from the stores would be one. This is an extreme action but better than loosing the colonies. If they are flying you should be fine, just remember what quick means…...

Feeding Bees – Why? When? Where? How?

The argument for not using cane sugar was more about it being in some way toxic for bees, for me it’s a plus not to have to import from Europe. Tate & Lyle was of course one of our best British companies only sold recently to the Americans (2010)

Feeding Bees – Why? When? Where? How?

Just to change the tac of this thread slightly before we end up down a recent thread path. I was castigated some years ago for arguing that we should use Cane sugar rather than the imported EU beat sugars. Anyone suggest why these are so different, we could soon be back to using cane sugar. I...

    Too late to Merge?

No need to risk a “test frame” just a patch to the size of a match box will do, they just need a few eggs or verry young lava to draw a queen cell from. Put in the suspect hive in the middle of the hive at the top of a frame.

Can Bee species really be so different?

I will live, lack of joined up brain cells is the problem :ROFLMAO:

    Brood v stores

I would be inclined to reduce the stores by a couple of frames, this is were planning helps, if you have a couple of drawn frames from earlier in the season put them in one side of the brood area. If they are inclined to rear brood they will fill them while the weather is still on their side, if...

Can Bee species really be so different?

Yesterday I had a quick look at my bees impromptu and without a veil  black bee breeders and one Buckfast, the black bees are really active like a motorway rush hour lots of pollen coming in, the Buckfast quiet except for catching me on the eye, nose and ear, lots of water being...

    Inspection Tray

Looks like pollen, maybe from Poppy. You could invest in the Rex Sawyer pollen identification book, you will need a decent microscope and a little bit of other kit, also if you are real interested look at Graham Royals “ Through the looking glass” it’s a great book, if you get hooked like I did...
