I don't leave any, just make sure they have a few eggs and small larvae to build emergency cells from, then a week later destroy all of them and give them one frame with a few eggs larvae in so they can build more emergency cells, then destroy all of them... and give them back a clipped mated queen.

Try putting one in a hive with a young queen in September or early October and see if they draw it out to drone then.
