Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

Well no, personally I don't think it's about him, it started as a journal of an attempt at queen rearing by madasafish, based on some research reported through the apiarists blog. You could have been referring to one of the scientists that did the research or any of the people that have 'posted'...

What's flowering as forage in your area

I could never quite justify purchasing this book: https://www.summerfieldbooks.com/product/brambles-of-the-british-isles-4/ I think it's probably quite likely that most areas have many variants flowering over the course of the summer, there's certainly often a great deal of variation in fruit...

    Phenolic board

Got a few experimental boxes (nucs and full boxes) made from offcuts last autumn,. Can't say I'm overly keen but the bees seem to be doing ok in it. Was told it's best to build with the textured side facing out as that's the harder wearing surface although it occurs to me that the textured side...

What's flowering as forage in your area

It will do for sure but is usually used quickly by the bees (Portland is surprisingly hard on bees during the spring -so much for a south coast paradise). This year could be a little different as it's flowering that bit later than usual, but even this may be balanced by the reduced overall...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Mustard is out a few weeks later than in recent years and the plants are looking quite spindly compared to usual but nevertheless it's good timing from my viewpoint

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

But *if* they can, which does seem to be established now, are better eggs in greater part dependent on the nutritional status of the colony at swarming time and can it be sustained if the queen only has access to large cells? Might the stress of being caged in an artificial environment have some...

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

I like to use straight sidebars on the grafting frames. On a BS format, a DN1 (without any spacers) would be ideal. I don't suppose it makes any difference whatsoever in reality but I simply like to be able to crowd the flanking frames right in close to the grafts.

Or (in my case) to hold the bar in one hand and move it through the fingers as each graft is done so that the thumb is always marking the cup waiting to receive the next larvae.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Lots of the foul tasting and smelling stuff around here but I've only ever seen one bee on it and I'm pretty sure she never returned for a second visit.

    Demaree and 14x12s

The jumbo is quite a nice hive despite being designed around 35mm frame spacing -something that I don't think is ideal for such a large frame but that's just personal preference. One advantage the jumbo has over the 14x12 is that the frames, while bigger, have a better 'balance'; I always found...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

There was some research a few years ago, can't remember who/when, that came to the conclusion that most benefit was derived from colour or symbol markers located underneath the door. I may try and search that one out again.

Piles of dead bees under hives

You're fast tracking experience that a lot of beekeepers don't have, depressing as it seems from the inside there's a good chance that you're going to end up a very thoughtful bee handler if you keep going.

    Out apiary

I have a relatively simple approach to things, talk before throwing away a good situation but if the answers aren't what you need then don't hesitate to walk away.

    Latest from Defra on YLH

Well I'm not going to even try to get my head around those figures, nor do I trap but I do know that two nests were found within a couple of miles of me last summer and I don't live a million miles away from @The Poot, so to my simple way of thinking it doesn't seem "stupid" if some people in...

Is that because rye is the only place where Asian hornet queens can overwinter?

Advice on a single sealed QC discovery

I think the use of the word supersedure might be an unintentional red herring, I got the impression that he was talking about emergency response despite the word used. As for how these genetic lines exist, that's another interesting conundrum to add to this thread.
