    Queen Trouble

Well, they probably would have been fine but for the inspection. I wouldn't have worried about removing the cage -any comb issue would be relatively minor and easily sorted at a later date. But presumably there was some kind of comb removal to see the queen on the bottom board unless the cages...

    Queen Trouble

In answer to "what" you did wrong, you checked too soon. Chances are both queens were being accepted until you disturbed the nucs. But you've untangled two balling events and caged two queens -if there was a course for learning to do that it would cost a fair bit.

    British Black Bee Info

Merging. If RAB was still posting he'd now be giving a lecture on the use of proper beekeeping terminology 🙂

    Mail Order Queens

Rest assured, there won't be any arguing between me and M, I've been around far too long to consider trying! It's not even that I don't have a lot of sympathy for his core beliefs, just that I don't like what sometimes comes across as zero tolerance for other ways of doing things, especially...

    Mail Order Queens

I think you know me well enough to know that I won't intentionally waste your time with stuff that doesn't interest you but that I do have lots of references at my fingertips, all of which are easily searchable for those that are interested

    Mail Order Queens

Surely there has to be a difference. But you said earlier that they're all "non survivors". If you don't want to talk buckfast, don't categorise all the different modern lines in sweeping derogative statements , and at least give a passing nod to the fact that there are some internationally...

    Queen cage for varroa control

Stress. Probably the most important word in beekeeping

    Mail Order Queens

Bit of a tenuous connection but fencing and Lithuania in one post instantly made me think of the writings of E.J.Harrison

    Mail Order Queens

Research is surely an important part of their training, and when you have access to the man who's probably reared more buckfast queens in the UK than anyone else you'd think they'd get the message that there might be another angle.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Yes they do, and good honey it is too - once it's been allowed to mellow

    Mail Order Queens

Pleasant enough video, spoilt in my mind by too much emphasis on trying to denigrate the buckfast bee and it's original breeder rather than emphasising the work and results of those who are keeping locally adapted bees in hives.

Pre loading mini nucs with brood

I did similar with some homemade mini nucs for a few years but used a 5 frame nuc extension rather than a brood chamber. I don't use those particular nucs anymore but the principle worked fine

    Maize & Elderflower

It was a mighty hectic time for the beekeepers!

    Maize & Elderflower

Sadly not a large enough area to get any real benefit, if it was then I think it would require a juji gatame rather than a simple twist to get me to release a jar!! Last sainfoin we had was probably just over twenty years ago from the Salisbury plains, it infuriates me to think that the need to...

Why is the bottom box grumpiest?

You've probably answered the question as well as anyone else will be able to.

What's flowering as forage in your area

A seemingly small patch of sainfoin, one of my favourite bee plants. As recently as 2019 the entire stand consisted of less than 50 plants so there's hope.

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

Was this poor quality smoker actually a dadant or a totally different make? I only ask as I've never come across such a poor example from dadant.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I've had similar experiences (mentioned, with a photo or two, in a thread that B+ started a couple of years ago) my take is that it'll be fine to look. It's an interestingly under reported phenomenon. Willie Robson mentioned his dad discussing in the first edition of his 'Reflections' book but I...
