New warre beekeeper and harvesting question

I'd be concerned about that, those are the hives which often die from farmers and gardeners misusing pesticides

    Fondant v syrup

But as I say, they find fondant as easily. I'm going to suggest that it's possibly the processing of it by the bees that is the attractant rather than the actual feed itself, but I don't know for sure. Mating nucs which are bolstered by the addition of sealed feed in the comb don't suffer the...

    Fondant v syrup

In my experience wasps and ants find fondant as easily as they find syrup in mating nucs, even then, I've not noticed them wasting time killing larvae, if the feeder is at least part full *that's* where the bulk of the wasps will be when you take the lid off.

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

I was looking at Saturday but the more interesting lectures (for me) appear to be on Thursday and (especially) Friday - these things are never straightforward.

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

My grasp technical terminology is somewhat limited

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

I think the design advantage that the dadant has is the air feed into the centre of the chamber, I'm totally convinced that the dadant is easier to run than the average competition and that air tube is the only difference I can see.

    Clearing bees the Canadian way...

Hivemaker would have said that the blower is a very gentle way of clearing bees.

    Passionate Beekeeper looking for work

As the grandson of an Indian immigrant I can see a lot of scope and value in using labour where it's best needed but equally doubt that any single government prescribed masterplan will ever succeed in the face of increasing political and social pressure from certain quarters. No one with the...

    Passionate Beekeeper looking for work

I pretty much agree with all of this post with the exception of putting the responsibility of supplying housing on the employer, this is something which could lead to a lot of abuses of power. In my younger days I had a few jobs with 'accommodation' lucky for me that I've never had a problem...

    Passionate Beekeeper looking for work

I hope that this thread doesn't get locked away, I got one see no reason for a bee forum to hide facts.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Growing up in a beekeeping family pre varroa we would never bother pulling honey till the end of August/first half of September, we certainly weren't alone either.

    Paynes, closing?!

The John Rawson book would have benefitted greatly from some serious editing/organising. I've got to say that biographies are the only bee books (apart from the occasional specialist subject volume) that I really bother with these days. Bill McKibbens 'Oil and Honey' makes for a good read.

    Clearing Bees from Supers

Seen those on the Steppler YouTube channel. So clearly you've had good success with them?

What to Expect & Plan for my first Hive/s

I can't think of anyone I know personally, making money from bees over the long term, who didn't start from the perspective of loving the bees first and foremost. Subtle point to consider but an important one.

    Frame runners in nucs?

Someone's bright idea which has become UK standard. Good way to spend a few extra pence per box.

What's flowering as forage in your area

No personal knowledge of what's growing predominantly in your area but I'd have thought that you may possibly have h.hibernica as we do along the coast from you. Our ivy is in bud but experience has taught me that it takes at least two weeks from the point when they look like they're going to...

    Settling tank advice

The price difference (even greater than it initially looks as the Thornes 100kg is actually just short of £800) is probably just a reflection of the different businesses. One thing for certain is that you won't go far wrong with a Thomas. I'd advise, and this is purely personal preference, if...

Not a record to be pleased about :(

I remember being caught in the middle of the purchase of 100 colonies from quite a well known beekeeper, the person doing the buying did so, at the back end of winter, totally oblivious to a previous efb issue. Sure enough the inspectors descended at the earliest opportunity and almost all 100...
