How long would you drive to an out apiary

Wasn't going to comment until @Mint Bee mentioned Poole. Now I am, as I'm sure you're aware there has been a bit of a historic efb zone to the west of Poole so I'd be considering that if your drive is heading in that direction. It wouldn't be a deal breaker in itself of course.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

@lindsay s , without wanting to jump on @Antipodes toes on this one you may find the following interview with Leigh Slater about his attempts to preserve Amm in Tasmania interesting. The same channel also has a Willie Robson/black bee interview:

This Dewey Caron video about defensive behaviour makes for interesting listening:

New warre beekeeper and harvesting question

Probably my favourite bee scientist, great presentation approach, I just hope his retirement doesn't result in him vanishing from view. His new book due out in November* sounds good though. * Looks like it's now pushed back to January '25

What did you do in the Apiary today?

This was where my own question was going although equally, accepting natural losses over time it seems strange that there might still be a strong hybrid population. It's a shame the the results of the survey you mentioned were kept confidential. The link which @Antipodes has posted is...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That's an interesting stat, what was the overall average? With a relatively closed population I'd have imagined a pretty stable population unless someone's actively working with a different subspecies/strain.

New warre beekeeper and harvesting question

I've linked this Keith Delaplane interview before, for different reasons, but there's a lot in it. Starting at about 18mins there's an interesting look at varroa tolerance in apis mellifera.

    Dadant or Thorne Empire

One of those internet curiosities which probably isn't too relevant to this thread but is nevertheless quite interesting, a page from Wyatt Mangum's website discussing smokers with thermal imaging, he did actually use dadant smokers for the demonstrations...

New warre beekeeper and harvesting question

That's good news, I'm glad that's worked out well for you, the warre is a nice hive to use, it's true that I haven't been over keen on the pure warre methodology (although I reckon he'd have been open minded enough to turn a blind eye to improvisation so long as the peasants were making honey...

That's why they eat the ivy honey then🙂

But surely it doesn't disappear before nice combs of capped syrup?

What's flowering as forage in your area

It is, mixed with radish and few other bits. I took clearers but perhaps I'd have been better to take supers!

    Clearing bees the Canadian way...

I really can understand your point of view but that's why I suggested reading some of his beesource posts, maybe even watch a few more of his videos, from a distance he really does come across as one of the good guys but you need more context than this thread can offer.

    Privet hedges or specimen shrubs/trees

I've seen this in a few old books, it may well be right but in all honesty I can't imagine how much you'd need to taint a honey crop. There's masses of the stuff growing on the local cliffs but I've never had honey affected negatively by it.

    Clearing bees the Canadian way...

In the second video the bees are in nuc boxes, three nucs side by side, built to a width to allow two standard ten frame excluders (and stacks of supers) to fit neatly on top. How many frames would you expect in a nuc box? ____________________________ It's best not to judge people who, working...

    Privet hedges or specimen shrubs/trees

I might be wrong but I think all privet is attractive to bees. Green for hedge and yellow for stand alone a?

New warre beekeeper and harvesting question

I don't actually have to 'justify' anything, I've explained my use of wording and that's it, your attempt to escalate this into something else won't work with me.

New warre beekeeper and harvesting question

My comment has nothing to do with warre hives, rather, varroa-less beekeepers trying to fathom why their bees have crashed.... I know a bit about warre hives, they're just like any other wooden box
