    Clearing Bees from Supers

I'd probably take some simple precautions against a change in weather i.e. position under a canopy or use some kind of rain deflector if there's a rapid change. In general terms of clearance and speed I've recently tried Bee Quick on a cloth with very rapid results (minutes)

Things you never knew you needed...

I had a friend from Pentyre Halkyn who was bilingual. As a young man he played football with an English team in North Wales. He used to shout instructions in Welsh to the Welsh team which created mayhem when they followed them assuming it was from their own side. Haven't made contact for a few...

Things you never knew you needed...

Speaking of amplifiers - Proud dad mode on - my son had to build a project as part of his technical education course of many years ago. The college were suitably vague about what it should be, so as he played in a band at the time he opted for a Vox AC30 valve amplifier innards. Folded the...

Any opinions on honey jar filling

Traditional jam pans were always brass with an iron handle. Boiling fruit and sugar in the brass pans was often a longish job. I aren't aware of significant effects on the jam eaters. (Me included as a child)

    Konigin controller alternative

I used to send failed electronic PCBs to Geoff Drage at CET ltd for refurbishment and often they came back better than new when he identified a borderline choice of component in the original design. Try office hours 01923229224 - or https://cetltd.co.uk his speciality is in central heating...

    Bee sheds or Similar

Better not cause any more upset in the household. I'm getting the impression you're sharing your dwelling with a female Bricktop.

    DIY Security camera electronics

Not for bee related matters but a few weeks ago I bought a trail camera on ebay plus 64Mb TF card, some lithium batteries and charger. All together came to around 60.00 The unit had obviously been tested as there was a 2023 date set in its memory which took some figuring out to remove and set...

    Storm damage at Selby BKA

23rd August 2024 the BKA at Selby have suffered serious damage to their apiary in the town cemetery due to a large tree being blown down on top of it, crushing the framework and beehives. Currently SDC have closed access to the cemetery until the storm has passed and contractors have made the...

    eBay

I've only sold a couple of items on eBay but I buy a lot. In many years I've only had problems with three or four. I had a non delivery last week and despite saying I still wanted the item eBay simply refunded my money. PO tracking didn't show a dispatch so maybe I wasn't the only one to complain?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That didn't stop the barrage of extreme weather warnings from the usual suspects. 😎 Maybe my lenses have become rose tinted but I'm sure we had long HOT autumns and harvest times when we stooked sheaves of corn by hand while sweat formed a rivulet down backs and between buttocks. Oh the joys of...

Can you “seed” honey to keep it runny for longer?

I recall the class clown opening one of the gas taps on the bench and lighting the gas stream. The flame was about 8 feet high. The penalty of 5 Saturday morning detentions discouraged the rest of us from similar demonstrations.

Looking into joining the world of beekeeping

James is being kind to some of the numpties that upload their beekeeping "contributions" to YouTube. 😧

Looking into joining the world of beekeeping

Be VERY careful with secondhand hive equipment bought from unknown sources. You could end up with diseases that don't respond to simple cleaning procedures. Hence destruction by burning is mandated for some. It's a minefield for beginners so I'd suggest either saving up and buying new or...

One of a local group was suffering similar restrictions on lifting. I believe Thornes do half supers for nationals.

Can you “seed” honey to keep it runny for longer?

That's taking me back 60 years to afternoons in the chemistry lab. In the days when we had bunsen burners and glassware plus various noxious/acid/caustic reagents and no one wore huge goggles or rubber gloves. The only lab coat to be seen was the chemistry masters. Somehow we didn't kill or...

A couple of questions from my first proper end of season extraction.

You don't have a lab centrifuge tucked away from working days Dani?

    Varroa-resistant mites in Luxembourg

I sometimes wonder how many of the allegedly stainless sink unit tops manage to meet trade description legislation. (Having used lots of "proper" 316L stainless in process plants with never a hint of discolouration)

    Strainer/bucket design

No but the buggers get inside when family open the door. I'll assume from responses so far there isn't a commercially produced device so I'll have something to occupy my mind during the quiet season. 🤔🖖
