    Fake news

I am not sure if the Daily Mail is like the rags out here but if it is then IMO you are reading some pretty low level journalism and should actually be skeptic of it's news, using it as entertainment rather than a source of truth. People can read and believe whatever they like though, no...

    Fake news

No, questioning is healthy, but not believing the news and slamming them for every story they run, just because what they report is not something you agree with, and then going to a news source that has less credibility, in order to justify your point of view, makes you a conspiracy theorist...

God I love growing our own

Seedless grapes, this picture is not this seasons, as they are not near ready yet. I have a unheated plastic hoop house and have one grape growing up and over each hoop, 4 in total. This one is supposed to be Suffolk Seedless, definitely not for our zone 2a without this protection. The...

I was stung on the neck today

Took one under the eye. I must have been in her flight path but I was no where near the hives, just minding my own business taking the pea vines out to the pigs. She came screaming in from the left right behind my glasses and got wedged up against my nose. I saw one of those sting suction...

    Vegan honey (honea)!!!!!!!!

I worked in the kitchen at a summer art camp and we had to ask what food restrictions people had. One lady remarked that she was a "beady eyed vegan", what the heck was that? She explained that she did not eat anything with little or any eyes, our cook responded "so potatoes are out then?"

    Smokeless inspections

It is all probably hive temperament as well. I go into my hives at any time if I need to, cloudy, windy, wet, later, earlier and even in winter when temps. are around 5C. I am not saying smoke is not beneficial, I use it sometimes, but lung issues and fire issues have left me finding other ways.

    Supercedure Number 1 desirable trait

No, I was not talking about bees necessarily going extinct but other species when faced with pressure have not always overcome it, they have succumbed.

    Supercedure Number 1 desirable trait

    Or...... they go extinct.

    Smokeless inspections

I stopped using a smoker for the same reasons, fire. We live right up against the northern boreal forest and fire risk is always top of mind. I have used a spray bottle of water on and off but my bees seem to ramp up if I use smoke. They get louder and testy, just my own observations or maybe...

God I love growing our own

Like enrico says, absolutely. There is no trace of skin left it is a complete puree. In the winter I heat, season to taste and add a little fresh farm cream just before serving. I like it because it is simple and I don't need multiple bags of specific tomato based items in my freezer eg. sauce...

God I love growing our own

It is the only way I do tomatoes now. I put them in a large shallow roasting pan drizzle with olive oil add garlic, oregano and any other spice that takes my fancy. I roast them in the oven long and on a low heat until much of the water has evaporated. I use my hand held blender and wiz it up...

    questionable teaching or not?

Beekeepers cull good queens for all types of reasons in order to control how their apiaries function.

    questionable teaching or not?

From the university of Guelph, I too cannot unstack those tall stacks of boxes and taking out frame by frame to make a box easier to lift is a pain. I don't run langs anymore for that reason.

    Solstice

The beliefs around bee behaviour and the summer solstice are location dependant. The solstice has long passed and my bees have yet to ramp up. The main flow is one week out. So sure, use the timing of bee behaviour and what to expect based the summer solstice but remember to only pay attention...

Clipped queens & swarming and Layens hives

I was told the very same, I have found that not to be true. There is not much difference between the basics in a standard hive and a deep hive. Much of what I do has been learned from Ian Stepplar and other large conventional keepers. I follow their timelines, because they apply to my area, and...

Clipped queens & swarming and Layens hives

Nope, no problems at all I have used my hives for a few years and compared to the Langs they are a treat. There is no problem prising the frames up because you leave a space at the back or front of the hive, loosen the follower and then the rest just come out. I have not yet once rolled bees or...

Clipped queens & swarming and Layens hives

I have two Layens hives, I had one Lanstroth and gave it, along with the bees, away to my SIL this spring. I much prefer working the Layens. That said, IMO there are a few problems with the Layens plans the first is the touching top bars. Without the ability for the bees to pass up and over...

American Beekeepers - astonishingly calm bees or crazy keepers?

The U of Guelph has a video on bee breeding where they explain how they breed specifically for calm bees. I love their videos, very informative and clear explanations.

    Hive Records question

I name the hive not the queen, for me she belongs to that hive, and I only keep one set of records but no separate sheet for the queens. I think if you are new these records can be very helpful. It is hard to remember what you did when, and if it worked or didn't. The first two years I kept a...

    Forum Poll

I was going to hit the "like" button but................ I am very new and I don't really see an issue with this forum. Sometimes we read a comment with our own emotion inserted. A comment written calmly but succinctly by a person can be construed as short, and harsh by the reader. I...
