    First inspection of the year.

This was always the worry. I only have foundation, no drawn comb, so bees might still struggle. On the upside, hives are Abelo poly, so well insulated. Next 7 day forecast is highs 15-18, lows 4-5 so here's hoping. I will have to set aside some frames of drawn comb for next spring.

    First inspection of the year.

Having read through this thread, I have removed remaining fondant and very briefly checked for brood and stores. Must have been 7 frames of stores and 2-3 frames of brood in each hive. I'm a bit worried about them being honey bound so I have put supers on top in the hope that during this sunny...

    Fondant for winter

And when you're just not sure? No point saying he should be sure, plenty of beekeepers aren't. Now is NOT the time to be saying " you don't want to do it like that". Supportive people would help find a solution to the immediate problem before offering advice to ensure it doesn't happen next...

    Fondant for winter

Bottom line...if you think , or are worried the stores might be a bit light, for whatever reason, especially if you may be away through midwinter, is there a problem leaving fondant on the frames? No, there isn't. Worst case scenario, you may have wasted a block, and you may have to replace a...

    Fondant for winter

Abelo feeder has 2 lidded compartments. Syrup in one seeps into the other. Bees can only access 1st chamber from the feed slot in CB, and that has a bee ladder so very difficult to flood.

    Fondant for winter

.I don't need a better feeder. Feeders for Abelo means no dead bees, minimal disturbance, no waste, no hassle.

    Fondant for winter

Also, Abelo feeder over feed slot on poly crown board means lid off, pour in syrup, lid on, leave. Not really faffing, probably 15 seconds. Hardly saw a bee

    Fondant for winter

Firstly, I'm not feeding little, it's a full feeder tray , (about 2 litres or 3kg of 2:1) refilled when empty, usually after about 3 days. So around 5Kg sugar a week through Oct. Literally can't feed any quicker. Second, the advice to feed until bees take no more came from NBU inspector with...

    Fondant for winter

I checked the frames on a warm afternoon in late Oct, probably 6 in each hive full to bursting. Bit of burr comb on top with honey in, so not too worried. Used apiguard for 5 weeks mid Aug to late Sept, will use oxalic vape in Jan.

    Fondant for winter

I am at the end of my first season, so still green. I fed my 2 colonies 2:1 every 2-3 days giving about 15kg to each throughout Oct. Beginning Nov I putting down 1kg fondant in one hive, 2kg in other( which had one empty frame) directly on to frames. After 10 days one hive had finished the pack...

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

Also, I googled walk away split. It came up with a thread on this site from 2015 featuring you and jenkinsbrynmair. Interesting read.

    Noted. Thanks for that.

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

In a frame full of brood in all stages, in what way are the emergency queens inferior to " good quality" produced under supercedure or swarm? Genuine question, cos I have read a lot of articles etc indicating there is no difference. Similarly there seems to be opinions on whether to choose the...

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

In effect that is what I did. The queen remained in the bottom box under queen excluder and the top one was filled with brood , stores and empty frames. Bees were shaken off to ensure queen remained below. After about 6 hours a good covering of nurse bees had moved up so I re-sited the top...

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

No, OP ( me) took advice from a beekeeper, that the hive was getting very full, looked at methods online, chose one that seemed reasonably easy for a novice and would acieve desired outcomes ( 2 smaller hives with plenty of time to make a queen and build up stores for winter). One hive is...

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

I So, a Mardy , unhelpful , negative, arrogant post. My hive was full of brood and a second super had gone on. I split by putting half the brood in to a new box and placed over the first with a queen excluder. After a day it was full of bees, so I removed it to make a new colony. The original...

Day 12 after the split I mean

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

Ok. So the nurse bees took a 3 day old egg on the day I split and raised it as an emergency queen? Should emerge on day 12 then?

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

2 Capped after 5 days? All the rest were open. Not a problem for me as that was the intention by splitting. Just seems a bit quick for them to have capped so quickly.

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

Thanks for that. So my understanding was it would take 9 days for the QC to be capped. I checked the hive 5 days after splitting and found 2 cells capped ,as you describe emergency cells hanging down from a worker cell in the middle of the frames. All the other QC's were along the bottom of the...
