    Swarms, queens, splits

On 1/5/23 I made a vertical split of my surviving overwintered hive. After 6 days i inspected to check for QC,and had a slight panic and added a frame of eggs/larvae. Today the split swarmed. I caught it and rehoused it in a new hive. On inspecting, original hive is bouncing and has 2 supers...

    Broke the QC

That was the original plan. Never broken a QC on inspection before so wasn't sure if they repair or abandon. Thx

    Broke the QC

I did a split last week, all going well.Went in after 5 days to check for QC, there were 2 on 1 frame and I could see large larva in one so only a day or so from capping. Unfortunatly the cells were were slightly bonded ro the adjacent frame so got slightly damaged when i removed the frames to...

    Advice for a (fairly) newbie!

Hi, I'm in York. I have 2 hives so PM me for a chat.

Super has more brood than honey

I had this problem. My solution was to put a super without frames over the brood box to act as a funnel, then shook every brood filled frame back in to the brood box, placed qe between the bb and now empty super (with brood filled frames) and after a week or 2 brood had emerged and gone down and...

    Swarm that returned to hive.

I'll ask him when I tell him of your somewhat disparaging view of a well qualified beekeeper

    Swarm that returned to hive.

So I discussed what I found with regional bee inspector. His view was a swarm and possibly cast had left hive, main swarm returned, a surprise to me but not uncommon, and the cast, located about 6ft from the hive hadn't. The hive was very full( though room in super and empty frames at each...

    Swarm that returned to hive.

Yesterday one of my 2 hives had brood + eggs and no qc. Other had several QC and no eggs. Couldn't find queen in either but that isn't unusual for me.Both hives v. Full. Knocked down all but 2 qc's assuming some kind of supercedure taking place. Today I found fist sized swarm in a bush. I caught...

    Queen in super

Last week I inspected my 2 hives and both bouncing and packing out the supers. I inspected today to find brood and eggs above the QE in the super. I can only assume Q was on QE last week and ended up on the wrong side. My bad. I have put QE above super to create brood + 1/2, with empty super on...

    Bees in garden advice

I think you should grow the hedge to at least 7-8 ft, and also that low wooden fence in front of the stable could be higher ( netting perhaps?). I have 2 hives at the bottom of my garden, approx 15 ft from the 7ft Hawthorne boundary hedge. Neighbours have never been bothered by the bees, and are...

Are we damaging our lungs by inhaling smoke?

I was a firefighter at a city centre fire station for 28 years. Honestly, I really wouldn't worry about the long term effects on your health caused by the small amounts of smoke from a smoker used infrequently for short periods

Requeening hive with better genetics - emergency cells

After last year's cold wet spring, I split a hive and let the split raise a queen from emergency cells. Unlike Jenkins it Worked a dream. Successfully overwintered both hives and both colonies have brood, are expanding and supers are on and filling. Many have the view that emergency cells...

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

30lbs total, collected first week of September followed by apiguard and feeding. They're in Abelo poly hives so toasty warm, and only disturbed bo OA treatment in January. Plenty of activity, quick check a few weeks ago showed brood and stores, so will leave until warmer spell next week

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

So I was reading the renegade beekeeper thread, which put me in mind of some of the negativity I got last year. I also wanted to reread the thread as a reminder of what I did and what I was told not to do. This forum is full of knowledgeable people who " know what they like and like what they...

Supercedure and swarm cells at the same time

Yes I did. And here we are with two bouncing strong hives that provided me with around 30lbs of honey and have come through the winter very well indeed .Looking forward to a good spring.

    First inspection of the year.

Indeed they won't. I'll have to filch some spares off them as the season progresses.
