    Wintering bees in the U.K.

As bees have been around for so long they must use imperial and not jonny foreigners more recent metric stuff surely? K;)

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

Read link and feel a lot more comfortable with what I saw now, thanks (I do subscribe to the Apiarists blog and have read it before but understand it better now) Vaped all three colonies this morning and sealed up until spring now (unless I need to vape again around Christmas?) Thanks again. K ;)

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

Thanks both, I expected to see some brood so was a bit shocked to see none in two of my three hives, hive 3 had a small amount of sealed brood and some larvae but obviously it was a cursory inspection as I removed the apivar strips. Queens were present on last proper inspection in September...

    Wintering bees in the U.K.

Allowing for regional variation among others approximately when do the Winter bees finish emerging? Is a busy but brood free colony which has just had Apivar strips removed after 8 weeks ok in the last week in October in NE England or does that indicate a problem ( like Q- )? K ;)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

But surely if they are out all the time, they are foraging and bringing back more stores? Assuming there's something for them to forage... K ;)

    Orange pollen in October

    Gorse perhaps? K 🤔

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Made another UFE out of scraps of wood. I'll swap floors on hive 1 in the spring so that will be all three hives on UFE's. K ;)

    Made from cappings

That looks Alien 😳 but very creative. Pity you could not make a mould out of it and make your own candlestick holder. I bet it would sell K ;)

    Oxalic acid

I thought I was ok with the 100grm I bought from Thornes last year... Mind you I have tried it a couple of times now and cannot see much improvement to the wood? Perhaps I should move the bees out first to let it work as intended? K 🤔 :ROFLMAO:

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Wrapped all three hives in bubble type insulation, triple layers, as night time temperatures forecast around 2c in coming nights. Looks neat, wind and rain proof so I'm pleased to get that done. Access to feeders below PIR insulated roofs is easily achieved too. K ;)

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Combined the two bb's I did a newspaper unite with last week. Went well so I have a viable "hive 3" with brood and stores. Hive 2 has a small amount of brood and lots of stores so I swapped a frame of stores into Hive 3 to help it. Hive 1 ( the original) is also doing well. All given fondant...

    APIVAR.

I bought Apivar last year (10 strips)for my only hive so only used two strips. The remainder I wrapped tightly in clingfilm, placed back in original envelope and sealed that with tape having removed as much air as possible, stored in poisons cupboard in the garage. This year, put in two strips...

    Butyric rodents

I was told to put broken glass in their holes... but the buggers kept twitching about so it was nigh on impossible:rolleyes: K ;)

    Clearing bees the Canadian way...

A gentle blower might be but have you seen the way they are blasted out against another box! Into the grass looks harsh enough but blasted onto another box cannot be good for the poor bees? K :(

    Clearing bees the Canadian way...

About 2.45 mins in, look how these guys clear bees from their boxes!!! Looks a bit brutal to me... Probably a bit quicker than Dani's remote stack method though. K

    Beesting as autoimmune trigger?

    It's definitely IBD... ulcerative Colitus I have. K :(

    Beesting as autoimmune trigger?

I don't remember stressing unduly about it but was watching carefully as the previous sting some six months earlier (also on the thumb) caused a red rash up my arm up as far as my elbow which went after a couple of days. Thanks K ;)
