    Took the roof off today....

Its only on one brood box and I'd read that the fondant should go on a QE to stop drips? There's double insulation on top. Cheers

    Took the roof off today....

Thankd Steve. First winter so very unsure or what's right and what's not. I won't go in again till the vape at new year and maybe put more candy on then. 2.5 kg should be plenty till then? Cheers again.

    Took the roof off today....

.....its been quite mild and dank here in Scotland, not cold but theres been no forage and i was a shade concerned they would have dented their stores. So i decided to place some fondant inside just in case. I would have preferred to have placed the candy directly onto the frames or on a QE but...

    Octimel 8 frame extractor

In fact, why is the gate not under the extractor like an oil sump? The idea is to strain it anyway. However im sure there's a good explanation.

    Octimel 8 frame extractor

Yeah i have read many people complain about the gate on extractors Angry Mob. Is it a real issue in this extractor or can you simply tip it forward a little? Are you happy with it overall? Thank you.

    Octimel 8 frame extractor

Ah, is that what they mean. I know, have seen, super frames which are narrower than my SN4s and presumed those to be SN1s. The deeps im familiar with as they are used in the association apiary. Was just checking before i buy that it would take my SN4s. Sorry for the very basic question but i...

    Octimel 8 frame extractor

Thrones sale has this kit on sale for £200. It states it can take 8 BS frames and it seems to be a good deal for the money but before I buy it I have a silly question. Is that SN4 frames or SN1’s. Thank you all in advance. PS, anyone else have one of these already?

I never knew that, I'll read up on it and make a choice. The bees know best. I've started planning just noe for just such options to weigh up. Thanks again cheers Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk

    Planning for next year

Hi everyone, being a first year beekeeper and trying to plan for next year (hopefully). I intend to do a vertical split in the spring and have fond many useful variations all including a split board. I've also been looking at Thornes Adapta eke as this strikes me as a good way of sublimation...

    Very presumptive of me....

What I've read about them drawing comb is that they'll only do it when the need to unless their fed. I suppose I'll wait till the 6 frames are covered and then pop on an excluder and let them get on with it when the flow starts. Thanks.

    Very presumptive of me....

.....but I'm already thinking of next year and how to expand safely. I'm using a 14x12 and should they make it through the winter im concerned about when to put a super on. My thinking is that it could be an idea to place the super on when i first give them 1x1 syrup as they will draw out...

Is it too late for syrup feeding?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate it's not an exact science but it did feel very light and better to be safe an err on the side of caution. I thought 12.5 kg of syrup added to another 12.5 kg of fondant in a couple of months would be enough but this is my first year. I have a clear crown board and...

Is it too late for syrup feeding?

Hello. One 14x12 hive since July 1st. Built up well and about two weeks ago I fed the bees, who already had stores, with a 12.5kg container of syrup. All good and I expected the ivy to come along and top them up. Ivy still isn’t out yet and the weather in Scotland has been wet and windy. Tonight...

What's expected at this time of year?

Thanks Enrico. I'll maybe have a go at that method. I have a spare hive hopefully to use next year and the present hive feels very heavy as it is just now. Well it should as only last week they took down 12.5kg of syrup to add to the stores they already had. Hopefully ivy will top them up...
