    Advice gratefully accepted.

Like most folks i guess, i like to help if i can. There's plenty bees and honey bound but without a laying queen then they can't be described as thriving. No treatments needed as they have been trickled in early winter and received apistan aroung March apparently. No trace of distressed bees...

    Advice gratefully accepted.

I was asked to take a look at two hives on a company plot. Perfect location. Lady who got the company to invest, modestly, in bees left for another job. Hives not neglected but left with rookies. Holidays etc meant that they weren't tended to at all since early-mid May. Went to have a shifty...

Backfilling the brood nest / box

I'm not an experienced beek but ive found that they will move up when they're ready to. Trust the bees to give you the heads up. Good luck.

    National Honey Monitoring Scheme

Mine arrived too and not what i expected either. Nearly 50% for the first two; Rubus bramble, Indian Balsam, Ribwort Plantain, Garden Privet, Heather, Garden Radish, Atlantic Ivy, Dicotyledons, Western Gorse, Cabbage, White Clover, Marsh Thistle.

    Mating flight?

Don't clip Eric, perhaps i should but that's a whole new other discussion. 🙄🤣

    Mating flight?

And thats exactly what happened and why they didn't stay clustered and returned to the hive after a very few minutes. Which of course is indicative of it not being a swarm.

    Mating flight?

With respect Finman, this was no cleansing/orientation flight, this looked like a swarm for all the world. Except it wasn't. I hadn't read, let alone witnessed, a mating flight could appear to be like a swarm and was asking others if they ever had. Thanks

    Mating flight?

But it didn't Finman. I could see the small cluster i though was the swarm and had my eye on it most of the time. These bees went back to hive and started fanning her home. 30 mins later i saw them all march in. That was a mating flight. Same thing two days later.

    Mating flight?

Yes and self evident. Must admit that i didn't that was the case. Her waiting around would probably mean certain death for her though?

    Mating flight?

Hope you all can help me please. A two hive apiary i have which has vexed me most of this year. Hive 1, overwintered queen, first summer. Built up very well and perhaps i never got the supers on early enough, built swarm cells. Queen nuked and 1 cell left. All good. But then bees swarm? Missed a...

Laurence Edwards' petition to allow the use of the word "Raw" to describe unheated, non-pressure filtered honey.

Yes Anduril, I've read that when i was getting frustrated trying to make soft set however the main thrust of my point is that I've never had to heat honey. In fact im dreading the day OSR turns up as i dont know how to cope with it.

I'm an absolute novice JBM and that's the reason for the ignorance I display in spades. In my mind candles are white, it was ever thus. Granted, the really impressive ones I saw and extinguished every week and more as a callow youth were the exclusive property of churches and yes, you're...

Read about bleaching this morning and I'm thinking why not? It recommends grating it down and leaving in the sun? However, as I live in Scotland then that'll have to wait for the three days in July next year then. 😫

Thank you all. First bit done. Now I need to get some kit for the second filter. Looks pretty good to my inexperienced eye though. A little debris but that should come out after the 2nd filtration? Cheers everyone. Please forgive the xmas tray. 😁. Its old so SWMBO allowed its use.

So it's not damaging the wax by reprocessing it Murox? Was worried it may degrade. Yes, I do frames through the thornes steamer gadget, works quite well but it's 'industrial' stuff. Ive kept the cappings from my first 3 years until now in a bucket as, like you suggested, I hoped for a better...

Hello all. Looking for advice on wax cappings. I've read previous posts and they've served me well but I've another couple of points which I couldn't find an explanation for. After the muslin bag trick, it served me well, I'm left with the disc. I've lifted it out but theres still a very little...

    Why won't my honey crystallize?

Mmm, not sure there is lime around me but I could certainly be wrong. Not to worry though, it tastes great (of course I'm biased)😁 and that's the main thing. I'll seed with shop bought.

    Why won't my honey crystallize?

Oh just regular wildflower/blossom honey. There's no orchards or fields of specific crops for bees nearby.
