How long before I should start to worry?!

You selected a cell 8 days ago. They are capped on day 8-9, so it's late if still open

    Reliability of the shake test

My policy was a shake test in the field then refractometer at home. I would invariably get several reject frames.

Delay between clearing supers and extracting.

I use rhombus cleaners. Put them on late afternoon and take boxes off early next morning. Boxes usually have no , or just a few, bees in . Porter escapes are totally unreliable in my experience but if using them I would allow 24 to 48 hours for clearing .

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Perhaps they are trying to tell you they need more space in the brood nest. I try to listen to my bees and let them guide me.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Thanks JBM. I know that by providing adequate space round the brood that is where they will put the pollen. It only goes in first super if there is not room in the BB. They always have pollen as close to brood as possible

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I run double National broods. Never get pollen in my supers

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I have had to give 2 queens 5 weeks before they started to lay. Bees are happy, test frame negative, she's in there somewhere. Even if not mated would lay unfertilised eggs

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I keep mine in an old mint tin in my suit pocket, along with my fluorescent pink pen. Age of queen is kept in my records. I painted the ring Bright yellow on the replacement after losing mine, which stuck into my wellie a few months later.

First inspection, loads stores and only capped drone cells

Eggs are eggs for only 3 days. A queen cell takes 16 days for her to emerge. The queen usually goes when the cell is sealed on about day 8. The maths explains it

    A slightly surreal conversation

I took enough exams in Med school, so for me sitting the module exams is a definite no no. I have gone down the husbandry assessment route and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Currently hold the general husbandry certificate and am unlikely to take it further, but I do believe the syllabi ( hope...

New beekeeper looking for advice on transporting bees....

I moved 3 hives l- Nationals in my car last year. Journey was 6 hours. Mesh top and bottom and they had a water misting every couple of hours. Think it through, prep well and no bother

I was wondering - those with two/three hives, do you split or just demaree?

I Demareed one strong hive. I now have 3 queen cells in nucs.

    Refractometer

Mine is a £25 cheapo from China. Still OK after 10 years. Sorry have no other details

Problem: taking off heavy supers for extraction.

I don't bother with empty supers. My clearer boards have 2-3" ekes attached and always clear down fine.

    Your oldest queen?

My bees are currently superseding their 4 year old queen. She is still laying, but slow. Was doing well last season

    **** extraction

Shake test in the field and refractometer at home. Still have to reject some who passed the shake test

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Bees put stores above the brood. In order to avoid this at this time of the season, I make sure that brood is directly under the QX. They then automatically put the nectar into the supers. Depending on your situation you could always reverse brood boxes.

    Mares/Horsetail weed

I trample it to bruise it and then spray with glyphosate with a drop of detergent in it. Still takes a couple of years and even then get the odd one appearing

    Stopping supercedure becoming swarming?

One of mine is in same situation. I too am leaving them to it

    Mild Nosema?

I wouldn't worry. They had some thymol syrup and that is good against nosema. Nosema is only one cause of dysentery, which results in splats. Nosema can only be accurately diagnosed by microscopy. See what happens now the weather has improved.
