    Apiary tool box

Standard dose is 1mg, often given as repeated doses. In cardiac arrest situations may be injected straight into the heart. Usually IV or IM. Just as adrenaline boost is short lived in the fight or flight response, so it is when injected.

    Warming cabinet heater

As already mentioned, some heaters have built in thermal cut outs. If so you will never reach required temps. I use an old upright fridge and before installing a fan heat distribution was a bit erratic.

Let's get this into perspective. There are 2-9 deaths per year from anaphylaxis from stings in the UK. Twice as many from wasp stings than bees. In 2019 in the UK there were 1711 RTA fatalities. Anaphylaxis rarely leads to death. Anaphylaxis itself is uncommon mostly from food.

    Apiary tool box

Make tentative diagnosis. Dial 999. Remove from danger, basic first aid, epipen ( only got one? Might need a second dose after 15 mins). Sublingual anti histamine. And that is only part of it. How many people carry 2 epipens, intravenous steroids , oxygen, intravenous fluids( looks like help...

    Apiary tool box

A retired doctor here. When will you lot get your heads round the fact that epipens are not the be all and end all to allergic reactions. They are just one tool in the box. In 40 years in medicine I have only had to use adrenaline a handful of times in "allergic " situations.

    Glue gun

Same as JBM. Never had a frame fail through bad nailing. Never use glue. I recycle frames. Easy to take bits out if they need replacing

    Defective Gas Vap Burner

Looks to me like an ordinary filling port. Bet it is the air inlet that needs adjusting

    Hefting

It depends on the type of bee and weather. The weight may go down quickly in some, slower in others. From mid Jan I heft each week, and if I get concerned in next month or two will give fondant

What's flowering as forage in your area

Driving through Newton Abbot today I saw yellow Hazel catkins, by the look of them bearing pollen

I found long hives brilliant as brood factories, but nowhere near a National for honey production

God I love growing our own

I hate this Devon red soil, despite being told by local farmers that it is very fertile. When I dig it, I find very few worms. It is clay like, easily waterlogged, dries hard in summer. If I leave manure on the surface, the dog eats it. I shall just keep digging in as much manure as I can ger

God I love growing our own

Having recently moved to Devon, and getting a garden on typical Devon red soil, I am finding it a challenge. It eats up the manure I dig into it. Mercifully the area is very equestrian and I have good access to free, well rotted manure. The dog is forever tracking red paw prints in, onto the...

    Plastic Beehives

You get wood advocates and poly advocates. Many use different arguments to base their decision on. I believe poly might be marginally better for the bees, but aesthetically I prefer cedar every time . Pick a format and stick to it. I get confused about the which make of poly is best too

    Fiddling vs curiosity/necessity

If I feed fondant I put it on a framed QX immediately on top of top bars. Then, if I need to access frames ( which , i admit is rare at that time of year) , I just lift the qx and fondant up. If placed direct on top bars, the fondant can end up well stuck to them. If any fondant is left at end...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

That's not mean, it's sensible. I am flabbergasted by the amount of good timber I see in skips. I got some good roof battens yesterday, having asked the roofers first, of course. It will build a good picket fence to keep the dog off my veg patch

    A tale of 2 apiaries

Your home bees are from swarms, hence likely to be locally adapted and used to flying in your temperatures. Yout "Buckfast ", by their very name, will have come from elsewhere at least at some point.

    Solar wax melter

Built around a poly box free from the butchers. Covered in thin ply. All I bought was the metal sheet for the tray, from screwfix for £5. The glass is single pane, 6 mm. Cut to size free by local glazier. Again I already had it. The one I made in the summer did not work very well, it was much...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Using the clear wood preservation I mention above, my home built stuff using recycled soft wood, is still showing no signs of rot after 12 years. Except where feet have been in contact with bare earth, despite standing in creosote for a few days before assembly
