    First sting

I got stung for the first time today. I did wonder what it would be like, having only ever been stung by a wasp (vespula vulgaris) before. I had googled what the difference was between them before getting a hive, but I didn't really find much information. Posting here in case it's useful for...

How to prep a hive for 3 weeks without inspection?

I'm back and the hive has done very well. I did put on a super just in case. In the three weeks of nice weather, they've added another half frame of brood and filed out most of the rest of the brood frames with honey. They've also started pulling out a couple of frames of the super.

How to prep a hive for 3 weeks without inspection?

Many thanks for the posts. I still have the reduced entrance in place since they were transferred as a nuc, they never need to queue, so it was ok to keep it. Today they have 5 frames of brood, 2.5 of capped honey, 2 of drawn comb with unripe honey, 0.5 drawing and 1 of foundation. That's up by...

How to prep a hive for 3 weeks without inspection?

My first year of beekeeping and I have a nuc in a national doing very well. I'm heading overseas for three weeks and the person who was going to inspect the hive weekly may not be able to do it. So I am keen to have a plan B. At the current rate of expansion, the bees will have drawn filled the...

    Nuc expansion rate?

Delighted to say that a couple of inspections later, they are doing really well. Two more sides pulled out, lots of stores and the brood has expanded by a frame too. If they keep going, I might even get a super on this year! =)

    Nuc expansion rate?

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not in any rush, so will just continue to feed them and see how they get on when some more nurse bees hatch. Out of curiosity, when you say stores, does that include drawn comb with mostly nectar, or generally just frames of capped honey?

    Nuc expansion rate?

Many thanks. The nuc was well covered with bees when I transferred it (flying bees out as it was a nice afternoon). There are indeed three frames of brood and a couple of stores. I'm wondering if they are actually limited for brood space, which is limiting the bees. They seem very docile, with...

    Nuc expansion rate?

I installed my first nuc (5 frames) into a hive (11 frames) and have fed them with 1:1 and candipolline gold to get them going (and also as the June gap is actually about now in Northern Ireland). The nuc was made up from a 2022 queen, so had only just capped the first new brood from this queen...

    honey price update

I would suggest having a range of prices to support one another, even for modest differences in the honey. Imagine you're at a restaurant and the wine is £10, £12, £15, £18, £25. Most people will pick the £12 or £15 bottle. Guess what happens if you drop the £10 and add a £50 bottle? Bring a...

How to get bees to use broken frame?

Ah ha! That sounds like an ideal solution. I didn't realise the bees would do that, but of course makes sense that they would. Thanks all for the replies.

How to get bees to use broken frame?

I've just installed a nuc into a national and discovered one of the frames had been repaired and as a result didn't fit. It's an outer frame, so has useful stores of uncapped nectar and pollen. I've jimmied it in for now, but it's going to fail in an inspection or two. Is there a way to get the...
