Varroa aggregate on young drones, IN PREFERENCE to nurse bees

Yes I understand that. My point was that this is an approach already used by some ( in addition to and seperate to removing drone brood ).

Varroa aggregate on young drones, IN PREFERENCE to nurse bees

I thought that was an approach already being used by people who want to try and reduce Varroa without the use of chemicals. Would of thought that the fact that Varroa have no problem hosting on drones is evidenced by the mites spread when it intially became endemic, given that drones regularly...

    Theft prevention

I've heard that some people have had success with those little trip mechanisms that can be used to set off a blank shotgun cartridge when gates are opened. I don't know how practical it would be fitted to a hive stand or roof though. You'd have to remember to disable it each inspection though...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I've found that it helps if I use a rampin to locate the pin in position before tapping home with a small hammer. Are you trying to hammer the pins for the bar from the top down into the top bar or at 90 degrees to it?

    bees and sheep

There's no such thing as sheep proof sadly :ROFLMAO: They are like water, given enough time and they'll find a way in.

I wish there was a fool proof way of keeping them off the lupins and delphiniums

    Illuminated sales shelf!

That would have been my approach Garry. Unless Newbeneil is concerned that any passing new trade won't be attracted, only coming on when existing customers approach close enough?

    Orchard planting

Not a requirement as far as I'm aware, unless it's something in a specific stewardship/ greening scheme. There are grants available for traditional hedge laying but I've not heard about any such for flailing. We tend to aim to lay a boundry each year, time permitting, and then have a guy come...

Whats falling down the gap between the NBU and the BBKA?

So I need to start insulating my hives with dyed wool you say? Got it.

Which frames and how many to use in a swarm trap?

I'd like to know. I went through one with a mini digger once, made a right damn mess.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Made a start removing deadwood from the apiary and cleared some patches of bramble in area intended for some hives. It's a nice change to be able to get on with a vehichle at this time of year as normally even a hard frost isn't enough.

    Thornes' Nasanov Swarm Lure

I've caught swarms with and without a Nasanov lure but I can't recall whether the boxes with it in were selected before those without I'm afraid. If youre getting results without I'd save the expenense. I'd guess that location and suitability of their new home plays a bigger role.
