    Hi all

I'm heading for Newport in a couple of weeks, when the heatwave has passed. We always try to pick up some local honey. Where should I look for yours and what should I look for?

A sensible number of hives for beginners next year

Do you know if your garage colony has been in absolutely continuous occupation for 10 years? There are lots of people who say that wild / feral colonies cannot survive for more than 2 or 3 years without succumbing to Varroa/virus, and that apparently long-lived wild colonies are really just...

Honey - more effective than conventional medicine

The word 'mead' can be traced right back to the proto-IndoEuropean language that is the root of many languages in Europe and beyond, including Welsh/Celtic, English, Greek, Latin and all the Latinate languages, all the Germanic languages, Persian, Sanskrit and a now-extinct language in western...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's years since a sting during an inspection gave me a stiff hand and a swelling going half way up my forearm the next day Why now? It was a wasp! :leaving:

    OSR or cover crop

Does white mustard have the same tendency to granulate as OSR? In my bit of the S Midlands there are a lot of similar brassica cover-crops with white, rather than yellow, flowers - but I assume it's just another strain of white mustard. Mine have a large area close enough to walk to

    Swarm absconding

That's interesting - I did not know that. I lost a swarm for the first time ever this year, and it was definitely a cast (I collected the prime one a week earlier. Still got that!) Does it make a difference if the cast is taken more than 3 miles, so their surroundings are unfamiliar?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Swapped colony A into Nuc B at location A; swapped colony B into Nuc A at location B. Not sure my recording system is up to this

What's flowering as forage in your area

    >>No don’t think so, perfectly normal to see some at the end of this month. Main flush is normally mid June though but there’s normally some still going for about 4 weeks after. Ian I can imagine that is true in Surrey. Here in Warks, in a normally cold valley on the edge of the Cotswolds...

What's flowering as forage in your area

I'm quite surprised to hear you say this. We have had OSR, which is now going over, much earlier (3 weeks) than usual, but in the last week I've seen sycamore, rowan, cotoneaster, ceanothus, the apple is in full flower, rosemary and hawthorne just hitting full bloom, field beans. I may be...

    Mad Mad..

Just looked at last year's records: did my first inspection on 4 March and the **** was in flower by 30 March (Ha!). Bees flying freely for a couple of hours yesterday, though it was cold enough for jumpers and coats (me, not the bees), even while working. Today was forecast full sun, but it...

    Confused

Sorry to pick up a somewhat old thread, but I'm still just as confused. One well-known, major UK supplier still seems to be selling made up OA + sugar solution with fairly explicit instructions for medicinal use - albeit in the category of "winter hive care". Others who used to do it have...

    Hello from south west France

We were vaguely in that area (between Toulouse & Bordeaux) in October and it was a rather sobering experience to watch Asian hornet hawking a couple of hives that we stumbled across. I tried to talk to the beekeeper but he was not home. Have you picked up any tips for dealing with them - there...

    Selling Price for Raw Propolis

Exactly my reaction! The content is a very low % - well under 1%; can't remember exactly. Presumably a marketing gimmick to attract...who, exactly?!

Have they told you what they are going to make with it? Just interested, I can't help with your question I'm afraid. A friend brought me some propolis toothpaste the other day (make me an offer - only used once ;-) )

    Ivy Watch

Up here in the hills of N Oxon we are usually a couple of weeks behind Oxford, but I saw first flowers yesterday - covered in wasps but not bees! (Yes,I know my profile says Warks - that's where the bees are - I live over the hill :-) )
