    Bakers’ fondant

Has anyone tried this: PF108165 7kg Cremesuc Inverted Sugar Syrup in a pail with a high dry substance in a soft paste [S.CREMESUC7] - £7.10 : Chocolate Falls It says it's invert - which you may dismiss as fairy dust, but who knows. The idea of a convenient 7kg pail as a one-stop autumn feed is...

    Honey on Toast ?

My father was a master baker. He used to use apricot jam to make sure the marzipan stuck to the wedding cake before he iced and decorated it. (and a couple of drops of glycerine in the royal icing so that it didn't go rock hard by wedding day)

    Honey on Toast ?

I'm a bit sceptical here. I can't find any other source that supports that etymology - though I admit that if it's wrong you'd expect one or the other to complain. It's a bit of a step from "dies" to "dia" (why not "Diegeo"?) , dia is a common Greek prefix meaning "across/through/over"...

    Honey on Toast ?

Back in the day, I tagged along as a passenger on a journey to fetch those ingungurus of honey from hunters in West Pokot back to Nairobi. I don't use the word "hunters" lightly; in those days the guys were carrying spears, bows and arrows

    Honey on Toast ?

Welsh, English, Latin and Greek (and Sanskrit and Persian) all go back to the same root language, spoken 6-8000 years ago in an area north-east of the Caspian Sea. Re-mixing is fine :) I once worked for a large multi-national marketing Co. The MD stood up at a meeting soon after Grand Met...

    Honey on Toast ?

I'm very glad someone finally mentioned marmalade! Home-made in January, from Seville oranges; 10 minutes in a pressure cooker to soften the peel; 10 minutes (max) on a rolling boil. Include a couple of lemons per batch; for a bit of variation, add a grapefruit to one batch and some ginger in...

    I-phone to Android

Didn't I put something on one of these threads about the weird way modern tech distorts language? Talktalk is what I'm supposed to use (but don't) to access this forum, isn't it? So I'm supposed to talk talk to you guys using, er, written text

    I-phone to Android

Look - I can't sleep because Covid, because Trump, because the planet's on fire, because supply chains in January, because we're going to be supplanted by intelligent machines ... You guys are not helping!

    I-phone to Android

:) I went to the Republic of Ireland as late as 1985 and tried calling a friend who only had 2 digits (if you see what I mean!) I got a voice on the other end asking me what number I was trying to get. When I told her, she said, "Oh I'll try to connect you but they'll not be there this morning...

    I-phone to Android

The chaos of language and function around technology is a constant source of amusement to me (I don't get out much). The main uses I make of my "phone" are Reading the newspaper (no paper) Listening to the radio (which I still call the "wireless", oh dear) Listening to a news analysis...

    Set honey

I agree with all of this, including the fact that my naturally set honey sells well and is directly asked for by some regular customers. OSR honey can indeed set quite hard, but I would describe it as "dense" rather than coarse-grained. To me, coarse-gained means large crystals; rapid...

    Stingless bees

How's it going in Tanzania? Is anyone managing to export? Is it possible to buy it in UK?

    Stingless bees

A pity we can't dabble with these in UK. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/nov/14/stingless-sugarbags-the-joys-of-keeping-native-bees?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Scratched my head, while watching them bring in copious amounts of pollen at 10.30am on 12 Nov, at 8degC with a stiff breeze. Relax, guys, relax!

    Experience using Hoffman Converter Clips

Isn't it funny how we're all different. I get on fine with the over the top ones. Plastic spacers over the lugs, on the other hand, are in my top three beekeeping "hates", along with Porter escapes and wired foundation!:leaving: It's not a very expensive mistake if you don't like them 🙂

Country file / oil seed **** and Buck wheat .

The withdrawal of neonics has made it a much higher risk crop - the main risk being lack of crop establishment in a dodgy autumn. This autumn growing conditions this year have been exceptional in many areas. Some of these OSR crops could end up being 'too good' over winter, if we get heavy snow...

Country file / oil seed **** and Buck wheat .

In Brittany, buckwheat flour is used to make savoury "crepes", which they call "galettes". They reserve the word "crepes" for sweet pancakes made with wheat flour. Traditional festivals based almost entirely on the mass production of galettes (and crepes for afters) by the local WI-equivalent...

Country file / oil seed **** and Buck wheat .

According to this, honeybees can and do play a part (in US anyway), particularly in some cultivars. I must admit I've never seen bees on linseed
