    Honeycomb

I thought that was chunk honey and I have seen it for sale all over the place. For show purposes I believe that the bottom of the jar is heated and the chunk put in perpendicular and the wax at the bottom of the comb chunk sticks to the hot jar. The jar is then filled with liquid honey turning...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Remember the last summer crop was rubbish due to the weather - wet and cool. The spring crop and blossom was superb. This year was the exact opposite. Lousy winter and spring. Quite a few losses and a very slow start. Summer has gone from starvation alerts about a month ago to supers...

    Acetic acid question

Acetic acid does not corrode stainless steel in foundation unlike the old stuff. I would not be too concerned about a sprayer - make sure when finished you give it several flushes of water before storage. As an aside. our parish bought a grit spreader for salting and gritting the road near...

    Where are the wasps?

Virtually no wasps here. Very few cabbage white butterflies and very few bumble bees which normally are bobbing about on the lavender by now as it is in full bloom here.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Today we have had flood warnings with heavy rain. Fortunately its not biblical in amount but the bees will be staying at home and it's not overly warm. The weather later in the week is supposed to improve. My little voice recorder arrived and so have taken the opportunity to read the manual...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

The Welsh like the ball with pointy ends and rounded edges - Oh got muddled up with another thread, sorry.

    rounded edges

Might try that on a couple of my 30+ year old polys just glued in wit a smear of gorilla polyurethane glue and screwed

    Fireweed, hawthorn and lime

I kept bees successfully in Aberdeenshire for over 30 years so there is no problem in Montrose. There is a lady on Orkney who posts on the forum so Montrose is "tropical" by comparison. This year has been tricky so say the least everywhere, from looking at starvation five weeks ago to 2, 3 and...

Equipment For Sale Uncapper for National frames

Now back from "holiday" 24 hours later than planned (medical emergency on plane requiring then turning back to Edinburgh and no flights back to Bristol for 24 hours) so some paperwork for reclaims to be done now - not my emergency thankfully. Anyhow any orders for an uncapper can now be dealt...

Thanks to those who have made the suggestions and links - very useful.

    Langstroth frames

Thinking about it but not sure if the demand out there in the UK would be worth the effort of re-jigging. Also looks as if Langstroth frames are a less consistent standard size than Nationals which concerns me in terms of puncturing the cappings well enough. Watch this space....................

    Langstroth frames

There seem to be a range of Langstroth frame sizes depending on country of origin. Could anyone using Langstroth frames in the UK let me have the internal side bar to side bar dimension of a wooden Langstroth frame and the external dimension ie from the outer side bar to outer side bar of a...

Presumably the grand opening will be a ceremonial ripping of the toilet roll.

Equipment For Sale Uncapper for National frames

I am off for a couple of days next week to see son in law over from the US so I can only process a a couple of orders today and tomorrow and then not until next Saturday 13th July. Really busy trying to keep up with bees, uncappers and decorating as well. Patience appreciated.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Bees, bramble and clover all ready to go BUT we hit the dizzy heights of 20C for 1 hour next Thursday according to XC weather. Not a disaster but not what we hope for in July. Today, here, from 1pm we are promised unbroken sunshine but a high of 15C. I thought they promised change after the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

At the price of bees it's a good investment for next year to get the colony well established now with plenty of stores and well founded in winter bees. It's also fun
