    Preparing for winter

Season 1 I think you have done really well if you have a super of honey. Nectar flow will be declining now but you seem to have a young newly mated queen which is laying well and will be providing you with the long living winter bees. Don't risk taking the honey off and then feeding ,possibly...

    New Information board needed?

INFORMATION BOARD (UPDATE) "This eco hive was set up by well meaning nature lovers about two years ago. We were hoping that a wild, healthy swarm would move in but unforunately this did not happen. However, a kind beekeeper donated an unwanted late cast headed by a virgin queen , Due to poor...

    Which brush?

Geese defy the laws of conservation of matter - they crap more than they eat. A friend once told me that his attempt to fence them in was defeated by the entire flock crapping in one corner of the enclosure and when the pile was high enough they just walked out!!

    Extracting National Deep Frames

hen I moved from Scotland to England I had overlooked the property rules. Broadly in Scotland you sell the land with everything on it - house, sheds, greenhouse naming the pots of plants etc which you are going to take. On arrival at the new shed with house attached I was pretty surprised to...

Equipment For Sale Uncapper for National frames

After several requests for a video of the uncapper in action I have got one to show - I forgot to take one last year and the uncapping/extraction was done and dusted until now. Hope this works as the file might be a bit large (and I am no tech genius - (see thread on old age!!!). Just checked...

    Getting old

Wonderful to realise that Amari is 83 - gives me another 10 years!! I have been a type 1 insulin dependant diabetic now for 55 years and my advice is don't let anything stop you doing anything you are still able to do. If you have to give something up, do something different that you can still...

Equipment For Sale Uncapper for National frames

Just to let you know that after a few enquiries on the forum about Langstroth frames I can now offer an uncapper which is suitable for Langstroth frames. It follows the same mode of action as the National uncapper but due to the extra length it is mounted on the 50L collecting box in a slightly...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

To be fair she is someone who seems happy when she can discharge a patient after successful treatment and the patient is happy too in feeling pain free.

Just for some fun.... an excuse to smile.

When I was in my teens I lived in Northern Ireland in the country. There was no broadband - not invented, TV was black and white so entertainment was limited - remember the World Cup 1966 , There were no buses after 9pm due to the troubles. I recall never being bored - fishing, golf, cricket...

    Randy Oliver OA sponges

I have been reading the following document which is from DEFRA in 2023 https://www.vmd.defra.gov.uk/productinformationdatabase/files/SPC_Documents/SPC_807534.PDF A gram of OA per hive per vape seems to be used per brood box in vaping. In some cases the vaping is done every 5 days to keep...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Clearer boards on. Anything left to bring in the bees can have. A colony which went queenless has now got a mated and laying queen. Never had such a yellow queen so was simple to spot and mark. She looks quite Ukranian with the yellow abdomen and blue thorax!! Laying beautifully.

    Where are the wasps?

Wasps beginning to appear at my apiary but have put my wasp guards on . They seem a bit confused already while the bees have the whole thing sussed in about 20 minutes. Entrances on nucs cut down while I make more guards. A trip to the DIY shop to get some more trunking in the morning.

    Randy Oliver OA sponges

The sponges I used are about 5-6mm thick. I see no reason why a strip of them should not hang between frames.
