Price of honey jars - up , up , up

Or are they round ones with slightly hexagonal corners? With the Chinese you can never tell.

    Tool ID?

That looks like a really smart window job. Looks like you have a team of very skilled guys in the new venture who know what they are doing. Knowing your skills no doubt the panel that was removed will be turned into something really useful in the beekeeping department!!

Price of honey jars - up , up , up

Any ideas where the best 2024 1lb and 12oz jars prices are at present? Needing about 400 of each. Just to save me searching in case anyone else has done it. Thanks

God I love growing our own

My late Dad owned a factory in 1952 in Dublin which made beautiful mahogany lavatory seats. Unfortunately it was just at the point in history when the world moved to making plastic seats and as they were so cheap the business had to close. Dad then made his living turning wooden bowls which...

    May be slightly obsessed *twitch*

I know a few beekeepers who have full width entrances about 450mm x 12mm high and these seem successful for them in the summer when bees are in full flow mode. Indeed hives are sold in this format. In winter this entrance is cut down hugely. I use 80 x 10mm entrances all year round and with...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not in the apiary but two of these gigantic moths in the garden. No idea what they are but certainly impressive

    2 stroke fuel

I was told by my local agriculture "fixers" that the highest ethanol percentage (E10) fuel are death to the carburettors of strimmers, hedge cutters, brush cutters, chain saws etc. Hence E5 is the best fuel base for 2 strokes.

    2 stroke fuel

Pure 2 stroke oil?! Or do you mean 2 stroke fuel at 50:1 ratio petrol oil? I would have thought that neat oil would have oiled up the plug immediately. - the biggest cause of non-starting after a blocked jet in the carburettor

    Who makes their own foundation?

The one I make just has a sloped tray and the wax runs off the bottom edge when you pour the wax on the top and lower the top silicone sheet onto the bottom one. I collect the surplus wax in a baking tray well wetted with water and a drop of washing up liquid mixed in it. The silicone sheets...

    Does foundation matter?

I made my own silicone mould and it produces thicker than normal foundation which the bees love.

Equipment For Sale Uncapper for National frames

If you wish to order an uncapper in the next few days I will be unable to get it collected for postage until next Thursday as I sadly have to attend a funeral in Scotland but will deal with it immediately on my return. Garry Rucklidge

    Does foundation matter?

I know that it isn't practical for everyone but I make my own foundation and I at least know where it comes from and what medication the bees have had (if any) and so what might be in the wax.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Probably quicker and cheaper for the queens to be fitted with micro sat nav fitted and released to fly and find their own way to their apiary.

sugar cost and when to buy

The dearth may be over but you will still need to feed at some point. In early September feed syrup until they won't take down any more (as a rule of thumb). So if you see sugar cheap - buy it, it won't go wrong.

Got myself in a mess. Trying to sort it.

So glad it seems to have all worked out, It;s amazing that you can manipulate bees in this way but of course not all the time. I had three separate nucs which I had all side by side in the apiary which I wanted to combine into one colony. I understood that it was possible to combine 3...
