    Floor bee space

Ok thanks, guess I'll have to get my saw out again :P

    Floor bee space

I built some bottom entrance floors for the Abelo top bee space hives. I’ve found that the bees are producing comb from the bottom of the frames all the way to the floor. I followed the bee space from the article at http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/bsp.html ie 28mm Do people find other gaps...

Needing to move and split a problematic colony

That’s almost what I did today for the same reason. However I had an empty hive for the flyers to return to and then added a queen cell when they’d settled in. I had it ready grafted a few days prior. I’m only starting out so I may be wrong. Would the bees flying back to a different colony...

Bees camping in the Apidea feeder

I just checked my Apideas for feed and noticed that one colony had 90% of the bees in the feeder. It had a queen emerge from a QC last Thursday as I pulled it out to check. During the last check a few days ago the usual couple of bees seemed to be feeding. However, reading Daniel Basterfields...

Harvesting capped Queen cells prior to moving to an incubator

The Apiarist made a home made incubator and I think he was looking at 90% humidity. You need less when the queens have emerged.

Do I need to spray Apidea once opened if I'm feeding fondant?

I drowned a queen in the syrup in the last cycle. She must have nipped across in to the feeder when I was trying to find eggs. I've now got a little cover to put on the feeder when the main cover is off. However, this time I have given the bees some fondant. The front door is open and they...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I’ve been a lurker for the last year, absorbing all the valuable insights and really enjoying the discussions here. I started with two hives at the end of July last year, and this year I’ve been aiming to expand to six hives. However, the weather in the North of Scotland has been quite...

Why is the bottom box grumpiest?

So why do I get so many launching from the top box? On a lovely day with lots of bees flying, taking the lid off requires a deep breath before proceeding. I thought the nurse bees were meant to be calmer and not flying yet. I am in the process of getting a queen mated in the top box to replace...

Why is the bottom box grumpiest?

I made a demaree for the first time and found that when I take off the top lid, the bees instantly attack in force from the top box. I thought they would be mainly nurse bees in the top. Presumably it's the field bees delivering stores to the top who then take offence? It's like there are bees...

    That’s awesome. Love it :)

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

During my studies on this, I read a way of doing this is to fill a new hive with frames of brood and bees and let it go totally queen less. Ie squish all new queen cells repeatedly until all larvae and eggs are gone. Then when you put in the eggs they are desperate for the ability to requeen...

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

I was wondering if there was a way of fencing the queen into an area with a queen cup and seeing if she could be forced to lay in that if she has run out of normal cells to lay in.

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

I wonder if just confining her to the run of the cups rather than the whole frame might be better? I was going to try and make something similar when I get some time.

How long did you leave the queen in for?

    Thanks. I’ll check with them.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I'll be super interested in the result as I'm sure others will be as well. Is it worth having a separate thread on this topic?

    Environmental health not interested!?!

Did you come to consensus on whether soft set was still primary production or not? :)
