What did you do in the Apiary today?

😁 Yeah, I'm pleased she started laying properly in the end. One of the darkest I got this year. She was a proper pain as she flew back to the apidea once (luckily I hadn't packed it away yet) and was a proper runner whilst trying to handle her. Took ages to lay as well. She laid 4 eggs in the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Finally found my apidea queen laying :P A little over a month after hatching from an emergency cell raised in an apidea. I was about to go and unite the colony today so a late reprieve. Now we will roll the dice on if they get through winter ok. The colony has been Q- for months and I've...

    APIVAR.

I only started keeping bees last year. One was a large split/swarm donated and the other made up with 4 frames of brood from other colonies in July. I treated both with apivar and only had about 20-30 mites for each hive on the boards over the treatment period. Then vaping in December gave me...

    Buying by the bucket

It's funny that. I was reading the EU legislation which is retained in the UK after reading this thread.. The regulations (842/2004,853/2004 shall not apply when the direct supply, by the producer, of small quantities of primary products to the final consumer or to local retail establishments...

    Fondant v syrup

Unfortunately our local baker closed years ago. I’ll ask around though. Nice price though. Slightly more than raw sugar. Beats the Amazon £27 for 12.5kg

    Fondant v syrup

Where is a good place to get bulk fondant at a good price? I’ve seen the Bako site but there are no prices and a considerable number of fondants to choose from leaving me quite confused :)

    Settling tank advice

https://gwenyngruffydd.co.uk/products/prinox-stainless-steel-ultra-fine-sieve-for-100kg-settling-tank-40cm-diameter According to the description these fit inside the GG model.

    Settling tank advice

I couldn’t work out a reason for the huge difference in price :) I’ve noticed that extractors seem to vary in steel thickness. I haven’t been able to find any specs on these two products.

    Settling tank advice

I guess they seem to be a cylinder made of steel and I can't determine what make a difference to what they achieve. One may have thicker steel, but at the end of the day I don't think that will make a difference in day to day use.

    Environmental health not interested!?!

https://food.ec.europa.eu/system/files/2018-10/biosafety_fh_legis_guidance_reg-2004-852_en.pdf This document has the following definition for primary production with regards the EU regulations which were retained in Scottish law. I imagine it applies to England as well. Honey and other food...

    Settling tank advice

I was wondering what the Thomas settling tank at Thornes offers over the Thomas prinox from GwennynGruffydd. It seems like I can get the tank, sieves and a stand for considerably less than the one at Thornes. Does anyone have any experience of them?

    Konigin controller alternative

Nope. I am looking at a second hand one but your experience has put me off. The new model is £240 and at that point I might as well buy a new machine.

Thanks very much for the advice.

    Konigin controller alternative

Thanks. This led me to this website which is quite clear. Are there any implications with the increased start current? Ie would the windings be two small? or the fact that the voltage is lower means it isn’t a problem? Would you recommend a higher power inverter because of th inrush current...

    Konigin controller alternative

I think the suggestion won't work as it is only a 230v output.

    Konigin controller alternative

On another thread the motor used is shown to be a So a three phase star configuration. My knowledge is a bit poor on this topic. Is it an induction motor? I am wondering if there is alternative to the Konigin controller that would work with it? Something like this...

I was just about to unite and then …

Thanks for replies all. It’s a bit complicated. Was two weeks from swarm before I checked. Was no eggs at that point but looked a bit strange with no prepped cells and they had also stopped drawing comb whilst filling up the remainder. I put in a test frame. This also had the queen cell from...

Would you cage the queen in the q+ colony during the uniting?

I was just about to unite and then …

I forgot to mention that my test frame has a capped queen cell on it. So do I leave it to emerge. Or is it likely to be killed by the bees? I’d prefer to shake out and save the comb if they are likely to ruin my comb whilst waiting for the mated queen.
