"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

Oh, sorry, no offence was intended; I haven't taken the time to read the Constitution of BIBBA, ... I'm in (Northern) Ireland and therefore I'm really only familiar with NIHBS here in Ireland, and their constitution clearly states you cannot keep any other bee than the Amm... I made the...

DNA Research into 'unique' Welsh Bees?

mmm... yes.... I too would have dismissed the article in WalesOnline as somewhat ...err... inaccurate, but for the fact that it does seem to clearly reference DNA research... The (Daily)MailOnline's best part was this gem filled sentence; "The rare apis mellifera mellifera or British Black...

DNA Research into 'unique' Welsh Bees?

Hi all Can anyone help us find this? I would really like to get my hands on DNA analysis of bees from here in Britain that previously I was unaware of. Recently the below Link was provided in a different Thread on this Forum...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

Do you have a link to that article? I don't understand that sentence... how would BIBBA members be observing a higher survival rate for Amm bees compared to other bees, doesn't being a member of BIBBA preclude the beek from keeping any other bee than the Amm??? Just like being a member of NIHBS...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

The last sentence of that article says "The second stage of the survey involves DNA analysis - and it is this that has shown that the Welsh bees are unique to the British Isles" BUT the article does not provide a link to this "DNA analysis" which has shown the "Welsh bees (to be) unique"...

"Survivor bees" found in Blenheim Forest

*from memory* In 2017 here in Ireland, 415 hives were sampled, 2 beeks stated they kept Buckfast types, so out of 413 samples of beeks that actively kept 'black' bees and the rest just keeping ... "bog standard bees", the average percent of AMM was just under 98%. There was recently some...

    New publication from RP

43:20 minutes into the Lecture "Challenge What You Are Told" by Roger patterson, the Subject MATCHSTICKS is mentioned.... he ends by saying "There's a lot of noisy know-alls in beekeeping... they ought to be ignored" Overall it's a good lecture, presented in a individualistic manner, I would...

    New publication from RP

Are you referring to the research that found that Virgin Queens 80% of the time fly to the next (nearest) Drone Congregation Area (DCA) and only 20% of the time fly to the nearest DCA: And that Drones fly to the nearest DCA 80% of the time and the next (nearest) only 20% of the time?

    Buckfast

You may find that the 'breeder' / supplier of the Amm's may be a bigger factor in their characteristics than the fact that they are Amms; I've observed / heard of a very large variation in Amm's characteristics... but have observed / heard of more consistent characteristics from Carnica and...

    Buckfast

Ah Yes! That was the only issue that I found with the Buckfast Bees, they did build up faster than I expected and also put on more honey as well, as I didn't have enough boxes and stuff this was difficult to juggle... basically make sure you have a spare box, frames, etc. and you'll bee good!

Would a colony survive winter in a half nuc?

You don't think a Mesh floor is needed, for ventilation, etc. there are many beeks here that now strongly believe they help the bees a lot, the debate is whether the Inspection Tray should be left in or not... I've seen newer Apidea designs with an OMF of sorts: I've experimented with...

Would a colony survive winter in a half nuc?

So ideally you have; the Apidea with the feeder removed and replaced with two mini frames, an Apidea Super placed on top of this, but with the Feeder still in place (is this Feeder filled with syrup or fondant? fondant I'm guessing?), and on top of the lower frames (the plastic Crown Board has...

Would a colony survive winter in a half nuc?

Do you put fondant in the Feeder in the Apidea or give them an extra two mini frames (and allow them to fill them up with stores), I can't really see where you could put fondant in an Apidea, although I have seen a beek cram fondant into / just under, the lid of an apidea. The general consensus...

Would a colony survive winter in a half nuc?

OHHH o_O You mean a wooden cozy (think tea cozy) all over the Apidea, for extra extra insulation and wind / rain protection! Very clever, and you find that this makes a big difference, mmm.

Would a colony survive winter in a half nuc?

What is your survival rate, I've heard an average of around 20% death rate (of the queen) can occur in apideas. I've taken single frame nucs through the winter, of the three that I tried, two survived, one of which was my best queen for that following year, so it didn't affect the quality of...

    A way to combat CBPV?

Try this Link https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3670375/ if you don't want to use the doi reference provided. Thanks Frazer for providing this, it's very interesting.

    The brown bee

It seems quite straight forward from reading that; It appears the nicknames Black and Brown are being used for the same sub-specie, the A. m. mellifera, but there does appear to be a claim that the Brown (maybe more brown than other A.m.m.) are mainly from Holland. The nicknames Dutch and...

    The brown bee

NEVER heard nor read anything like that, and I've read extensively on the History of bees and bee breeding (I'm especially interested in pre WW2 beekeeping). I'd be VERY interested to read what you have been "reading" can you give a Link or name, etc. However what I have read, after the Isle Of...

    Show me the honey.

How would she know if she is always 'Gauntlet-ed up' ... yes I know she means stung on the skin, but still sometimes I have to manipulate the bees a lot, shaking them out etc. and the air is thick with bees, one always gets in the fold of the bee suit just to try and get you when you take the...
