Using a Fridge to Set Honey

Have bitten the bullet at long last and just ordered a wine fridge - definitely need to hide that from the boss! Wilco you’ll be getting the blame for that ;)

    Wasps

Have seen quite a few in this neck of the woods. Savaging scrapings and also taking fibres from boxes…….I get the feeling it’s going to be a waspy end to the season

    Dearth of nectar

The little darlings never seem to have a problem back filling brood boxes though do they………:sneaky:

Honey from a euthanised hive: safe for consumption?

As the honey is for your own consumption I’d give it a go, you’ll soon know if anything is amiss but doubt there’s anything wrong with it - I wouldn’t be selling the stuff though. As for your beekeeping skills - they do need a little refining to say the least! If you’re keeping bees in the back...

    honey price update

Yep, priced at £7/12oz I’m not surprised summer 21 crop is still on the shelf - unless I’m mistaken if you zoom in on the photo it states June/July 21. Guessing the store has now resorted to a home made ‘Raw Honey’ to push sales.

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

Children under 12 months of age shouldn’t eat honey due to the potential risk of botulism - albeit a very small risk. As for your Manuka honey, each to their own. I‘l be sticking to local honey that I know isn’t adulterated in any way (and isn’t flown in from the other side of the world)

    Sole Trader/Tax question.....

I’m registered for Vat & would do the same again. Keep basic accounts & a friendly accountant files my year end partnership accounts. Digital tax re Vat has added a complication but nothing too strenuous and can be dealt with.

Are the holes in my queen excluder too small?

Was it an un-drawn super? Sometimes the bees can be a bit hesitant going into as there may be no need for them to use it, means a lot of work drawing wax so why bother if no need. If it is un-drawn spray some suger solution onto the frames which may kick start activity or just be patient...

    Another show and tell poser

Can’t see much in the way of stores on those frames……. Eggs in No.3 piccy? Newly laying queen that has finally come into lay in a colony that has had a prime swarm leave plus casts……now currently being robbed out????

    warming cabinet

I believe used in a cabinet they’re in danger of becoming a fire hazard. Far better either with an old style light bulb or preferably tube heaters linked to a controller

Free Making Tax Digital Bridging Software?

As usual, something simple has now become less so  I’m Vat registered and keep all my accounts on an excel spreadsheet submitting the relevant info directly to HMRC each quarter. For my next return I’m having to go digital, is anyone out there using some free bridging software they are...

Honey Wanted Honey for my honey please

If anywhere near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk feel free to give me a shout(y)

Making a caught swarm stay put

I would think a case of just bad luck - it’s a very swarmy start to the year around Suffolk, build up has been excellent which has moved things along quickly. Maybe a frame of drawn comb would encourage to stay.

    Chronic bee paralysis overnight?

Would the thinking behind throwing out be the immediate disposal of anything weak leaving only the healthiest to return? Albeit a certain amount potentially still infected but then coupled with the lack of floor a sort of belt & braces approach? Only asking so don’t bite. The colonies I’ve had...

Bees on the underside of the floor

You don’t have clipped queens do you? A favourite place for them to go after falling out the front door. Crawl up and under the OMF.

    Commercial to National Hive

Just check top v bottom bee space on your existing kit v commercial stuff. As long as it’s the same then just run commercial brood’s with everything else National.

    Queen clipping

On the rare occasion I’ve had a queen balled following clipping I’ve splatted a dollop of honey scraped from the comb straight onto her - read this tip a while ago and it seems to work, sort of kill or cure type method!

    Vat on nucs

Yep your services would be subject to Vat so payable to HMRC I would have thought. But when we set up as a Vat registered business we were able to claim the previous 4 years Vat paid on equipment……….

    My most regular customer

Amari you have the patience of a saint! If it had been due to the debris on the inside left of the jar I’d have understood:biggrinjester:
