    Best Electric Extractors?

I’d put big purchases on hold until the appropriate moment. Abelo usually have offers on around the national Honey show for example. If you waited until the next BeeTradeX in February then you’d have plenty to choose from. Carl Fritz would get my vote

    How much?!

How about viewing it like an investment to make your life easier? Dedicated piece of food hi-gene equipment that will be paid for by the Honey you extract from your excess brood frames. Going by some prices that’ll be paid back in no time.

Visit to Thornes at Rand yestersay

Their open day in October is well worth a visit, not only for the sale side of things but as a customer I always feel really well looked after - hats off to them

    Extraction

Just bear in mind with heavy un-capped supers, nectar does weigh a lot and when 2 or three supers are ‘ripened’ by the bees this may result in a single finished super. While colonies are strong with bees & therefore a lot of warmth in the hive don’t panic about the crop setting.:hairpull: When...

Mother Nature can be so cruel

Magpies are plenty here in Suffolk - I think some additional lines need to be added to that poem as it stops at 7! Everyone used to employ a Larsen trap in the olde days to keep the numbers in check - times have changed & people don’t seem to understand the damage they do to eggs, chicks &...

First swarm call of the year.

Not wishing to sound a grump but that’s not best practice - you may lose the odd swarm as you’ve already experienced but not often. Whipping away the swarm during the day will just leave a mass of bees drifting around with no purpose. Others may then be called out to collect the remnants which...

    Mass Shootings

Not wishing to downplay these tragic incidents but media hype certainly doesn’t help. The latest ‘mass’ shooting reported in Alabama involves 4 victims at the moment according to the BBC, I wouldn’t describe this as mass. Yes this is a tragic unnecessary loss which one would rewind and make good...

    Top or bottom bee space

Your problem is not bee space It’s going with a National brood box Only joking. What ever you go with is what you’ll get used to - simplest to go with standard

    Castellated frames or hoffman style

Dummy board in the brood box with Hoffmans allows free movement - no dummy board is the only reason I can think of why it’d be difficult to move the first frame

    £99 honey!

When you have a delve around their website the price isn't the only eye watering factor…………laughter tears with all the marketing ballacks cannot be held back. ‘using our proprietary whole comb technology’ ‘contains the highest levels of a substance called bee bread’ ‘Bio-availability: Bee bread...

    Sold MIXED HONEY SALE

Someone may correct/clarify but I seem to think you shouldn’t sell unlabelled jars for onward sale………..distinction between being an owner producer or honey packer - or something along those lines or completely wrong in which case I apologise ???

    Tech and honey Show Management

Suffolk BKA have used an online entry system for a few years - friendly bunch & if you dropped them an email they’d give you a few pointers I’m sure. One thing I would say is there will always be those who favour a paper entry or just turn up on the day - shows I feel should be as inclusive as...

Veg Availability (split from Podilia's thread)

In some ways I’m quite pleased about this tomato & cucumber malarkey. Shipping products around the globe to satisfy consumer demand is all about profit, in the main, for big supermarkets. I know there’s a lot of press about turnips but equally so, there’s a lot to be said for local and seasonal.

    Lyson thread size

The valve came from Abelo https://www.abelo.co.uk/shop/tanksbottling-valves/honey-bottling-valve-copy/ I originally wanted to remove the fitted valves on Abelo kit & ultilise plastic camlock type fittings, never got as far as removing in fear of damaging the threads.

    Lyson thread size

You did well to get the original fittings off (if they were fitted), usually chemically bonded on. I ended up using the flange & attached the on/off valve directly to that.

When to take super off bottom

Patience, everyone will be keen to get going but that’s a way off yet. Go in too early & you’ll do more harm than good. Don’t be put off under supering over winter, I’d rather have the issue of bees in both boxes than no bees at all. With a bit of experience we all get the hang of it & make our...
