Shook swarms - all bees, every spring

The Montgomeryshire BKA has an apiary where they shook the whole lot due to efb last autumn. It'll be interesting to see how many colonies make it through to this season.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Celandines they are, a whole embankment covered in them. A source of early nectar I believe.

What's flowering as forage in your area

I didn't really look too hard as I was in the truck but I'll take a morning constitutional that way and see up close.

Shook swarms - all bees, every spring

Yes I know the situation with APIbioxal but he just thinks any oa vape including that isn't allowed. He's not read anything in at least ten years I think so still thinking icing sugar but only if they get varroa. We all know they already have varroa but he seems to think his 2 hives don't. It...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Loads of buttercups on an embankment near me but I don't know if the bees forage on them?

    bees and sheep

Plenty of space between hives and fence there looks a nice open site. For the posts you need a digging bar and a fencing maul.

Is it too early to do a bailey comb change?

Maybe a Demaree then before they begin building QCs? I've read jbm's explanation and it seems quite straightforward. I would like to make increase too this season but I also would like my first honey crop so that seems the best way to get both. I'll make a board later today with entry doors on...

Is it too early to do a bailey comb change?

Yes that's what I'm drawn to. Give them a comfortable space to fill then when it's a full 5 frames of brood and if they start to make swarm preps it's time to give them a bit more room and so on and so forth until autumn.

Is it too early to do a bailey comb change?

Very well put. Thanks for your advice, I definitely hang fire until there are full seams of bees. One other quick question, I have a 5 frame nuc boarded down to 3 frames at present. What would be my next move? Add a couple of frames in spring or move into a full hive with boards to say 5 or 6...

    First Swarm Sweep Stake!

It's when the undesirables hang flags from their (subsidised con£"+l &033£) windows and start drunken fights in the front garden around an old sofa where they sit.

Shook swarms - all bees, every spring

I think my (now ex) mentor must be reading the BBKA magazine as he recommends dusting with icing sugar and says oa vape is illegal no discussion, Hence my seeking opinions from professional keepers and experienced hobbyists on this site. I joined but only for the insurance as I've been offered...

Is it too early to do a bailey comb change?

I'm an ex bodybuilder currently working in forestry and tree surgery so no real worries on that front for a good few years I hope😉 I had wondered about the winter bees thing though and wrongly assumed they would gradually die off as replacements were hatched. I'll definitely wait.

Is it too early to do a bailey comb change?

I'll definitely wait in that case. I can crack on with frame and super building operations. I made a couple of supers yesterday for the cut comb foundation I bought but I'm thinking for extraction brood size boxes may be better as my extractor will take 4 brood size frames or 8 super size (I'm...

Hmmm, maybe I should attend the WBKA and send them to the royal 🙂

Am I looking for night time temperatures to be into high single/double figures?

    Beekeeping Show 25th

Telford was great, I didn't get to spend any money as swmbo and daughter were with me ☹️, next year we will do the royal Welsh event instead so they can go find other things to do. The thermo thingy to supposedly eradicate varroa looked interesting, much like heat packs all over the hive, I...

Is it too early to do a bailey comb change?

Hi all, it's been an interesting winter and I've managed to get my main hive and nuc through winter so far 🤞. The weather is improving by day temperature wise and my colony is building nicely. I wish to perform a bailey comb change as the main hive is on dirty almost black comb so long overdue...

    Wax moth control

I managed to buy a 200g bag of B.T from eBay it came from India and took about a fortnight to arrive but it was really cheap less than £15 if I remember. Worked great on my allotment crops. Just search for bacillus thuringiensis. Also topbuxus is available on Amazon. Same stuff.
