    Sore dog paw

Co-op gives 5k annual cover with cover for ongoing conditions year on year (she doesn't have any pre existing conditions now as she's only 16weeks old) for £7/mo. It's more the accident cover I'm looking for, I've had plenty of pets in my time and never had or needed insurance. It's all a con to...

    Young Hive frame identification

Your profile doesn't say where you're based, could be the colony of laying workers I shook out a fortnight ago 😉

    Sore dog paw

Hmm, I think I'll take out a policy covering accidents for sure as someone has mentioned that little dogs can injure / fracture limbs when they jump from something a bit too ambitious. There are policies with major insurers covering accidents and illness for a third of petplan. If I take out one...

    Sore dog paw

Thank you all for your advice, ill have to go through it with swmbo. I think Jack Russells are generally a healthy breed with few congenital problems so I'll look at the options. I wasn't aware of the pre existing conditions clauses so thank you again 👍

    Sore dog paw

Out of interest and concern can anyone recommend a good insurer for pet dogs as swmbo brought home a 13 week old miniature jack Russell from an animal rescue 2 weeks ago. She's covered by some gratis insurance arranged by the centre but that only lasts for I think 6 weeks so will need to get her...

    Prime swarm

I caught a prime swarm 11 days ago and did my first inspection yesterday. The hive is doing exceptionally well and has drawn out nearly the whole brood box from starter strips and foundation frames 50:50. The queen is laying well eggs and larvae covering 5 frames (of 10 langstroth). My question...

Swarms - how far before pitching?

The funniest bit is last year he said to me " if you lose a swarm then they become anybody's" He thinks any swarm passing by belongs to him because he's been beeking for years. 🤷‍♂️

Swarms - how far before pitching?

Pitching! I thought you said pinching. I say this because my ex mentor who lives 2 doors down, and who put out a garden full of bait hives the day I got my first colony last year put his head over my fence the other day dressed up in his bee suit and wellies as the huge swarm he had been chasing...

Swarms not as plentiful this year

I've no idea where they're coming from. Seems the last 4 came from the west of Bishop's Castle that I've seen. I also caught one up near Bury Ditches last week. I sat in a chair 10' from the hive when they arrived, it was amazing having so many loud buzzing bees all around yet feeling safe as...

Swarms not as plentiful this year

I've just had another swarm take up residence in a half empty of frames hive. When should I add more frames with starter strips/ foundation to the hive?

    Anyone sell frames of honey?

You have to factor in the cost of lost honey due to the bees using their energy to draw out another one too.

lots of dead bees around nucleus box

Follow the more experienced members, I'm only going off what I were by the company who I bought a nuc from last month so perhaps they're giving bad advice.

lots of dead bees around nucleus box

Ps a bowl of just water nearby is ok, just make sure to put stones or bits of wood in there for the bees to land on and not drown. Also I should mention to keep an eye open for the queen, be careful when transferring so as not to let her drop into the floor (put the nuc touching / adjacent the...

lots of dead bees around nucleus box

You should have transferred them after just an hour from placing the nuc on the spot where your hive is going. The weather is too hot for them to be cooped up in a correx box. Transfer them today, just put the hive where the nuc is now then transfer each frame across in the same order. Add a...

Where to shake out laying workers

Good morning all, I have a small colony in a hive which was a split from earlier this year. They are in my out apiary and on inspection yesterday I found laying workers and no queen. Also up there I have a nuc which has had a large swarm move in during the last week adjacent to the LW hive. My...
