What did you do in the Apiary today?

Busy busy as usual. All but my original allotment hives have been fully varroa treated. The others had the first dose, but bad weather stopped the second. It may stay warm enough to start again maybe. Either way, they have always been less infected, so I'm not too worried. There has been a...

BeeBase, the Good the Bad and the Ugly !

So are mine......but not "Second field on the left, where the old barn is." I use postcodes and general location. People who steal hives may have the experience, but they would certainly have problems in regard to my apiaries! :D

BeeBase, the Good the Bad and the Ugly !

Sorry.....just catching up on here. Is it now a legal requirement to register on Beebase now? I have always been registered with them. However, after this season, where I kept getting warnings of EFB within 3kls of my farm hives. I was thinking of deregistering. It's been far too stressful...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Last Wednesday I managed to get to the farm. I took another eighteen super-frames of honey and gave the bees there first Api-Life Var varroa treatment. I'm a bit late, but it is warm enough. The Ivy is providing a bumper amount of autumn food this year. I also picked three kilos of sloes...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yes. It's all around the Sandwell Valley in North Birmingham. Some of my bees look like they have had icing sugar sprinkled on them.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's been busy! I've been sourcing wood etc for benches to put hives on. I've also been making them. We took a second crop of honey from the farm bees the other day. Around 60 kg. More thn I expected, considering. There will be a bit more to come, when I sort them out for varroa treatment...

    Can bees manage themselves

Well said. This place does seem to attract people who are loud about subjects that they know very little about, yet 'wade in' anyway!

    Can bees manage themselves

I totally agree. I try not to keep 'fiddling' with my bees generally, but the EFB warnings have led me to checking the farm bees every couple of weeks. Lo and behold, there's been less honey this year and they are far more tetchy!

    Can bees manage themselves

Interesting....especially on the propolis. Mould suppression by having a mesh floor? Surely, ventilation from above is better, as mould is caused by liquid not being able to escape upwards.....as in condensation? Just a thought...

    Can bees manage themselves

RIGHT.....that's it.....hone them hive-tools.......light the smokers. Tally Hooooo! :devilish: :ROFLMAO:

    Can bees manage themselves

If there are such people, I suggest we all hunt them down. :devilish: When we find them, we start by poking them with hive-tools and maybe even puffing smoke at them with our smokers? Even at VERY close range! That'll learn'em ;):p:cool::ROFLMAO:o_O:giggle:

    Can bees manage themselves

You have a point. Naturally, honey bees, or woodland bees that we bred them from in the first place, would not live in the sort of environment that we provide them with? Warre's are maybe a more 'natural' design, but not commercially viable unfortunately. I tend to walk along the fence here...

Shredded plastic-backed corrugated cardboard packing - is it safe in the smoker?

Me too! I roll 'pealed' corrugated cardboard mixed with dried grass et., and hold them together in toilet roll holders. I light them, put them them in the smoker and surround with leaves, grass etc. :sifone:

Best Poly Nuc for a new Beekeeper

Some of the Maisemore's I bought early this year were badly moulded, so I won't be buying them again. I have a few BS ones that are excellent and will buy more at some point. I know nothing about about the Abelo ones, but judging by the quality of their twelve frame hives, I would reckon that...

    More allergic

There's hope for me yet then. I drink loads of mainly home-made wine and beer etc.. I'm pretty fit, but overweight and not getting any younger! My diet is good....too good maybe. The more I've been stung by bees the less of a reaction I have had. :devilish: ;)🍻🍷🍾:p

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Not been on here for ages. It may take a while to catch up. I blame more work than 'wittering!' For those who may be interested, things are not too bad here, though the honey crop here is not as good as last season, so far. I put it down to the limes, that looked so promising to start...

Making up a nuc....leave queenless for 24 hours or not?

When I make up queenless nucs, ready for a new queen, I do the following: I select at least two frames of sealed brood and one of stores. If I have the time I will shake the chosen frames, add a queen-excluder, then put the frames in another brood-box above the hive for an hour of so. It...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I've had to begin moving my bees off my partners Haven (allotment) as they were getting too naughty. I'm barely allowed on there in truth! I am in the process of moving them and some nucs up the hill out of the way. So far I've moved five nucs there and this weekend brought in two more for two...

EFB still around it seems 😞

That's no good. I've got a basement full of monkeys with typewriters! 🐒:devilish:
