    LimeWatch UK

Before I kept bees I looked after a large house in Oxfordshire for two politicians. ("No names....no packdrill" as they say!) The garden had an avenue of trees that I had to cut into 'cubes' twice a year. They never got the chance to flower which was a shame. Last seasons lime flowering looked...

Much to my surprise there was a post from Black Mountain Honey the other day. It said nothing really, except contact info. Was it in fact some sort of advert? If so I may do that at some point! :laughing-smiley-014

    Mead

By putting Sloes in my mead, have I in fact made Melomel? The berries were frozen in a freezer and then defrosted, before being added to the mix at the very beginning. I also added a handful of sultanas.

    Mead

I find that it will make itself! A while ago I forgot a bucket that I had left some honey in and then put some water in to wash it out. I was going to use it for cake or bread making. A week later I kept hearing a hissing noise and tracked it down to the bucket that was merrily bubbling away...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Visited the Sandwell lot yesterday. There was a lot of activity as expected. There are still some flowering Ivy in the more sheltered woodlands and Catkins coming out. There is also clover in the fields. I checked their stores which seemed pretty good, but I fed them a bit just to be on the...

    Honey Biscuits

I bake bread and cakes a lot, often using honey. However, biscuits are not on my menu. After reading your post I will give them a try. Thank you for all the research and findings!

    Moving colonies in winter

I was talking about moving bees now.....with the more 'temporate' conditions we are experiencing. I have moved a couple of colonies this year, when it was colder. One I did not bother to close down until they were being moved. They were opened again as soon as they were re-positioned.

In the spirit of Xmas, Raw honey maybe 😊

In think you have misunderstood what I said. I have family and friends in Germany!

    Moving colonies in winter

If you have to do it I suggest totally shutting them down for 24 hours. Then move them to their new location and leave then closed up for another 24 hours. When you then let them out, you will notice how a few tumble out, then fly around. After a few minutes you will notice that there will be...

Different types of foundation and different cell types

Just what I thought. Thorne's don't ask for a 'paper-trail' for every block of wax do they? :D

In the spirit of Xmas, Raw honey maybe 😊

I agree. I did see a programme some years ago about commercial bee practices in the USA. Farmers pay bee people to pollinate crops, especially in the west, where fruit is grown. Honey is a secondary concern it seems. Many bees get lost and die in the process of moving thousands of hives to...

    Cleaning and Sterilizing Brood Frames

I use soda crystals for all manner of bee related cleaning. I also run a blowtorch over frames, but don't find that it works so well, when I have tried to do that on my poly hive parts though.........:willy_nilly:

In the spirit of Xmas, Raw honey maybe 😊

If they had just promoted it as Vegan honey substitute, I could understand it, but to indicate that thousands of bees die, as a result of honey production is ridiculous. It's almost an act of war! :boxing_smiley:

    Eating pollen

I eat a lot of wet pollen straight from super frames when harvesting honey. Obviously it has bits of honey with it, so is sweeter. However, the lime pollen is really 'zesty' and there is a distinct flowery taste generally through the season. I have often wondered if there would be a market...

    A beekeepers christmas day

I had a Grandmother like that. She used to help take the wheelchair bound 'old people ' on trips. She was at least ten years older than most of them. It had to stop when she forgot a client who was left on Brighton Pier one day....

Is anyone watching the 2 hour programme on DMAX about the Asian Hornets in the USA? Looks like fun.......
