What did you do in the Apiary today?

I've checked the Brum bees in the warm weather. I didn't fuss them that much. The Selly Oak lot had plenty of stores and were just beginning to expand as the photo shows. The Sandwell lot were very busy but with less stores, so I supplemented them with half a kilo of fondant each, just in...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

A horror story! I lost three colonies at the farm and one at Sandwell under the same circumstances. They seemed okay until I suddenly realised there was no flying at the end of September, when all the other colonies were still active. Too late to do anything about it.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

SimonTBK must wonder what I do with mine. I think I bought about six last year and have still been found 'wanting!' What happens is that I put one down.....wander off ...get distracted....then it's LOST. A change of cycle bags and rucksacks late last year revealed four hive-tools....then I...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

No full inspection with the Sandwell Bees today. It was reasonably warm, with a lot activity, pollen going in etc., but still with a cool breeze. I had a look, but did not lift frames. They had almost finished their last fondant so I gave them half a kilo each. I fitted queen excluders on...

    Yep.....that's what I'm waiting for!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I do understand 'wind-chill' etc.. What I have found lately though is the 'happy happy.....Spring is here, isn't it all great' attitude of some tv forecasters, that downplay this, in favour of trying to bring us all a better outlook! I don't always have the time to go online to find out what...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

All my lot are looking good. A lot of pollen now going in on all three sites. The problem has been the weather. All these weather forecasters: "It's going to be nearly 60 degs F." Rubbish! They obviously have not been working outside in it  The wind is making the temperature far...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's the weirdest place. The allotments area is around a half a square mile. My partner has has three allotments there for twenty years. There are many abandoned patches, but some are held by 'extended' families, that do not always use them. The area can be described with one word: Anarchy...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thank you James, I have heard of him....very interesting. My background, reluctantly in the beginning, is in landscape design and gardening. As a 'lazy git' I try to get away with as little heavy digging as possible :sneaky: The problem here is that these allotments have been abandoned for...

    Ukraine - Podilia

    Mans best friend ?

When our dog Roxy died, if someone called at the house we'd hear her jump off a bed upstairs. She was still hanging about for at least a year! 🥰

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I've started my 'bee-friendly' garden on my new allotments in North Birmingham :p As the area is huge, I was going to create a sort of meadow. However, the soil is so rich that I'm now creating a series of borders and will plant a lot of herbs and flowers. Room will also be made for...

What's flowering as forage in your area

These were photographed over a mile from my apiary. The bees I have there are Buckfast mongrels, originally from a Thorne's bee producer 🐝

The farm apiary survived the storms! The others are ok as well :laughing-smiley-014

    Storm eunice

I checked the Sandwell hives today and they were fine. I have an awning set up in my garden, so I can work out there in the rain. I re-anchored it before the storm hit and it survived! I go to the allotment bees tomorrow and the farm bees on Monday to check for damage. As the more exposed...
