    Aerated blocks for hive stand

There is quite a difference in weight. 7kg as opposed to 18kg. I have had a few back problems recently and I like anything that is light.

    Aerated blocks for hive stand

I am thinking of using aerated blocks to support some of my hives. I wondering how well they will perform outside? Single 3.6N Aerated Block - 100mm | Wickes.co.uk

    Telegraph harumph pshaaw. Adulterers

A lot of this cheating goes on in Italy. If you find a pot of nice Tuscan honey in the supermarket with a picture of an old hive and the Ponte Vecchio in the distance you might read at the bottom of the label something that says bottled in Tuscany. The vendor certainly wont want to write Product...

It would be convenient to stick on one of those not for EU consumption labels.

God I love growing our own

Lidl and Aldi sell free range corn fed chicken at £5 per kilo. Even if you can buy corn at 15p-20p a kilo it is still going to be difficult to make a profit from raising a chicken. It would be curious to visit a free range farm and find out how this miracle is achieved.

God I love growing our own

I think no dig is the way to go. There seems to be a lot of evidence now that turning the soil over does more harm than good. I like Charles Dowding's youtube videos. I have learned quite a bit from them. I have had good success with his method of onion cultivation. I was buying sets but now I...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I bought 3 similar hives 12 years ago. The only problem with them has been the cover boards disintergrating. I keep them protected from the sun and rain. I think they will all need replacing within 5 years.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I am building a new dadant hive from a self assembly kit. When complete it just needs painting. It is made from soft pine and cost £70. Frames are not included.

    Let's share our garden setups

What a beautiful garden. I like your colourful hives. My parents had one small hive in their garden and the neighbours said they would take it up with the local council.

    Weird creature in hive

I find similar cells under the lids of my hives in Italy. They are usually cream and in neat rows. I always remove them because I thought they were predating the bees. I have seen them at the base of pylons too on metal plates protected from the sun and rain.

An expensive lesson here in Italy

I am in Italy too at 300m above sea level. I fed my bees a 1:1 sugar solution in August to get the queen laying at the end of the hot summer weather. Then in September and October there was a lot of ivy and golden rod. I found that if you take honey in late July and dont feed them afterwards...

    Oxalic Acid

I will leave them 60days. It is still warm at the end of October.

    Oxalic Acid

I am trying out Randy Oliver's extended release OA strips that I have prepared myself. I am curious to see how they perform.

    Double Nuc Hive

Yes I watched a couple of videos on this subject. In my case I will only have a single deep.I will give it a go and see what happens.

    Double Nuc Hive

I have two swarms in adjacent nucleus boxes. I was thinking of putting them side by side with a shared single queen excluder and a honey super. This arrangement is supposed to be quite productive. Has anyone tried it?

    Hello from France

We have compulsory registration in Italy. The central government knows the number and location of the hives and if you move the hives to collect honey. You can be fined if you forget to register. The whole thing is done on the internet.

    Hello from Illinois!

Do you subscribe to Bob Binnie and Kamon Reynolds? They share a lot of information about US bee keeping.

    Hello from Italy

We never had much success with early spring honey. This year they came through winter very well. We try to stop them swarming by giving them space in the hive and splitting. The result is that we get mixed flower honey in June. Last year the temperature went to 40C in May and we didnt get any honey.
