Hi all - Queen Cells + Swarm

It is unclear which box you are saying you found QCs in 3 weeks later, and also which box "also swarmed just after inspection." If you are talking about the box with the QC, the answer is that the bees will have made lots of additional emergency queen cells when you separated them off away from...

Should I move hive with a newly hatched queen?

Ahh - that's interesting - I found a pile of bee bits in the apiary, under some foliage, recently and wondered what had happened. Makes sense.

Idea for large scale varroa reduction...

All the objections raised above, plus one other. Varroa populations in a hive double (roughly) every month or so. All it would take would be for a few colonies to be untreated (or a few mites to survive the treatment) and it would be all over the UK again in a couple of years. From it's first...

Could one help me with an explanation for this...

You sure it was the old queen?

    Swarming after Swarm Prevention/Control

We can't answer this because we don't know what you have done as swarm prevention and control They didn't like the home you gave them, and left. Or the queen was actually from the hive you found her under (she had just undershot the entrance on returning from a mating flight) and she simply...

    Queen cups

As already said, queen cups (cups with no larva/royal jelly in) can be ignored, though I tend to tear than down as part of checking whether they have anything in. One of the things which leads beginners down the garden path more than any other is trying to second guess whether queen cells are...

A swarm has been sitting high in a tree above my apiary for 8 days now, despite good weather. Have they decided to stay?

Maybe Though it didn't stop a swarm the other day coming straight out of one hive and into another 4 stands along. Maybe some swarms are just more decisive than others.

A swarm has been sitting high in a tree above my apiary for 8 days now, despite good weather. Have they decided to stay?

Don't have much choice really, given my lack of ability to fly

Crazy if they can't make their mind up where to go. 3 bait hives plus numerous chimneys etc all in easy reach!

What do people reckon? What's the longest you have seen a swarm bivouac for (apart from those which have been locked in place by rain etc)

    Swarm Control Confusion

It's a bit of an overwhelming situation isn't it. As an amateur, my method these days is never to try and find the queen in situ, with thousands of flying bees around my head and on the comb. There are lots of methods, but as soon as I see charged queen cells I immediately: 1) Move the whole...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thanks. I was mightily relieved. Even more so when I just endoscoped them and found them all tucked up in the bait hive.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went into a hive 7 days after last inspection. A week ago there were cups, but I pulled down all the ones I saw and there were no eggs in anyway. Today, found multiple capped queen cells along the bottom of frames, where I am always diligent to check. Swore loudly, but hive very busy, so...

Why sell ten 10 frames with a box that can fit 11?

No, eleven brood frames is fine, that's the point of this thread "Complete" means that you have enough frames to fill the boxes that the frames are provided with. Anything less is misleading marketing. So 10 brood frames doesn't qualify as complete, and Bee Equipment shouldn't be using the term...

Bees all in a tiz - why?

It's usually just something in the weather that triggers all the hives to go "right, time for orientation flights, everyone who hasn't already done one get out there" Can't believe it was the mower if it was 40m away. My neighbour has a ride on that he uses just 10m away through a hedge, and...

    Managing a Poly Nuc

One of these? Polystyrene Nucleus Box with Frames and Foundation (beekeeping.co.uk) They are top bee space so you shouldn't have this issue. There's a 5mm+ gap between the top of the frames and the top of the brood box, right? Scrape any brace comb off the top of the frames and the underside...
