    What Are They Up To?

The crownboard with the 5 holes set to "ventilation mode" could be used when transporting bees in hot weather I guess? They are there as an option, and don't do any harm if not used. Most people just leave the poly discs in blocking them off the whole time, and quite rightly so.

    Mating flight?

Interesting point - I don't think you would get swarming if they are all released would you? Perhaps I am wrong in assuming this.

    Mating flight?

I just let them all out if they are alive, I must admit, and let them sort it out themselves. Not saying this is a better option than dispatching them.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Your association will usually be willing to email out a "nuc for sale" offer to all members.

Don't you just end up with double bee space when these boxes are stacked on each other?

    Bees in a tree

There's an identically positioned colony next to a busy footpath near me. No issues.

    Mating flight?

Yes, have only seen it two or three times, but I have seen it

Super has more brood than honey

Reducing the brood area in June seems like it might be a recipe for swarming

American Beekeepers - astonishingly calm bees or crazy keepers?

You also have to remember that a lot of these guys are in the southern states. You couldn't wear a beesuit down there for very long, I suspect, without heatstroke kicking in. But most of them seem to wear a veil as standard issue.

    life of a varroa mite?

Anything that lives up a chicken's bum must be pretty much unkillable, so this doesn't surprise me

    Hives stolen in Cornwall

Good point. Though plenty of people just steal the bees I think. On another note, I wish just once they wouldn't try to put the number of bees in the news articles. The BBC says 320,000, ITV says 400,0000 and Cornwall Live says 500,000......

Ahh, if you simply meant that there's less crushing risk with a 6 frame nuc than a 12 frame brood box, fair enough, that seems unarguable. I use these 6 frame nucs as full size hives, personally, by extending them vertically

Super has more brood than honey

Totally Using a frame of brood to draw bees up into a super with foundation in is perfectly sensible

Given that there are twice as many frames, thus half as many boxes required as with the nuc, I am not sure about your risk-per-bee maths there Beebe

American Beekeepers - astonishingly calm bees or crazy keepers?

I know. When I look at pictures of beekeepers in the 18th Century, literally none of them are wearing BBWear Ultra Bee suits. Doesn't leave much room for argument does it. Clearly the bees were much calmer back then.

How should I treat a hive?

Are you a member of a location association? If so, I would recommend that you ask them to put out a request for someone local to look at this colony.

Any explanation for QCs & no brood?!

This is not tenable for a beekeeper I am afraid :) Buy more without delay!
