    Sole Trader/Tax question.....

Register with HMRC for self assessment. Keep very good records. Fill out your self assessment tax return once per year. For income of just £1,500, you'll wish you'd just stayed under the radar though

Any explanation for QCs & no brood?!

Dead Hive, unknown cause images warning

Good, but perhaps a tad narrow. You can keep it at around 10cm wide for the whole year really (unless you have a weak hive in wasp robbing season which needs special help, in which case that width is good)

    Alighting Boards

Yes, a vertical surface below the entrance would be more natural. But there usually isn't one with hives placed on stands.

Supermarket honey price ridiculously low - why?

More like 4 or 5 times as much I believe

    Sole Trader/Tax question.....

Certainly if we are talking about an income which is just a bit over the allowance, I wouldn't be rushing to declare it. I don't think there's much chance of HMRC catching anyone selling nucs or honey.

    Was it supercedure or swarming?

Was the hive big enough to divide into three?
  8. Boston Bees

    Alighting Boards

It's not necessary, but it would help the odd forager returning heavily laden with pollen avoid underflying the entrance and landing in the grass But on the other hand, if you are just putting the hive on the ground, on a 4" plank, underflying won't be an issue anyway
  9. Boston Bees

    Sole Trader/Tax question.....

They won't let you register for VAT, I believe, given the scale you are talking about. As mentioned above it would be questionable even if you could.

    No, an entrance reducer
  11. Boston Bees

    How to stop the spread?

Yes, I am sure that having to destroy countless colonies due to bees getting in from abroad, the first thing they will be thinking is "let's import bees to fix this"

Dead Hive, unknown cause images warning

If it's a few cells, and you are sure they are disease free, sure you can, they will clean the bodies out and the comb will be useful. Or if the dead brood is just in one section, you could cut that section out and the bees will remake the comb no problem. Would I give a frame full of dead...

Dead Hive, unknown cause images warning

    (y) Bees never need a full width entrance, not even the strongest hives, IMHO. Might be OK for an underfloor entrance system, but not for a front-facing entrance.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

There are some circumstances where I wouldn't leave the box until evening - a street is definitely one of them. Had a nuc kicked over once, with bees everywhere - never again. I know you will leave flyers if you take it immediately, but this happens naturally when swarms leave their temporary...

Was a spring crop of honey taken?

Some stick to the frames when they die
  17. Boston Bees

Entrance appears to be open the full width of the brood box. If so, it's an open invitation to robbers.

    Placement of Capped Queen Cells

2 weeks from when you think the queens should have emerged. Even then I wouldn't be surprised not to see eggs - 28 days for that. But after 14 days at least the queens should have done their mating flights and be a bit more settled, so won't fly off into a hedge as soon as you lift the frame...

    River Cottage "natural beekeeping"

You think :) Just joshing. We all lose swarms.

Same as you do with your tree hive? ;)
