    Weight of my DB hives

Interesting graph. I notice hives 1 and 3 had a spike in weight in October. Then 1 and 4 spiked on about 12/December. Interestingly, hive 3 had a weight spike about the middle of January. Any ideas? The October spike could be Ivy I guess. What of the December and January spikes. Of course...

    Double crown board boards

Extruded polystyrene rigid insulation. Aversion to it? I guess some do. I've used is for at least 40 years...replacing shavings that needed to be replaced every autumn. The foam is separated from the bees...above the crown board with feed hole closed with duct tape. I wonder why the aversion...

    Double crown board boards

2" of rigid building foam on the crown board would work at least as well.

    Pollen frames reusable?

We often get full combs of old, shiny pollen from deadouts. I want to reuse those combs but it seemed to me they would be useless as empty comb. To find out, we marked hundreds of pollen combs and placed one in the second story of expanding nucleus colonies. To a comb. all were emptied of pollen...

Time to get the camera out againAnd spread some joy

Yeah, it really is. Dangerously cold. All the schools have been cancelled for the day. Even the ski areas are closed. -17F at 5:30pm this evening. And then, it will be 35-40F on Sunday. Crazy.

Time to get the camera out againAnd spread some joy

Thanks Dani. I am allowed to take honey to the UK. Of course it has to be in checked luggage. Not sure what is allowed...probably what JBM said. I have taken a case of cut comb honey for gifts. Carried on my lap on the plane. TSA considers Comb Honey to be a solid. :) I will be bringing some...

    Danger of honey adulteration

I feed syrup to my cell builders on grafting day. One gallon. The cell builder is a medium super on the BB, with a deep on top. The grafts are in the deep. 5 days after graft, the cell builder and super are placed on an excluder above the queen right colony. When the cells are harvested, the...

Time to get the camera out againAnd spread some joy

So nice to see the flower photos. You're all lucky to have pollen available on some some days. Not so lucky. The hives are buried in snow, and the temperatures? So cold here. -5F this morning with the temperatures falling through the day. -15F by the time we reach the bottom tonight. This...

Queen catcher clip handling (give me a chance)

Not so difficult to hold a queen while marking. Takes a bit of practice. Try marking lots of drones first. queen-marking

Honeyshow anecdotes & tips n tricks for a talk rqrd.

One funny story...In 2013 I attended the National. I entered a cut comb...about a perfect specimen. Unfortunately my entry was disqualified as it was in the wrong style container. The rule was a standard comb honey container with a clear cover. I had that covered and the judge said I could use...

    AFB Vaccine

Here in Vermont, our incidence of AFB is very low. I quit using TM prophylactically many decades ago...and held my breath. No outbreak. With such a low incidence, why would I use such a product. Now, if they could come up with a vaccine to control viruses, I would be all ears. I'm hoping the...

    VARROA SENSITIVE HYGIENE

Thank you. I remember the Hampshire presentation. I believe that's when we stayed with the Bennett's. Bob was a mortar expert and worked on many famous buildings. I can't remember his wife's name...wish I could. He had severe dementia so is probably gone. Their cat's name was Tony... Tony...
