From my local BKA FB page

A few years ago, at EAS, we staged the Battle of the Virgins. Placed two virgins in a Petri dish and let them battle. They surely did. For each battle, Zac donated one of his virgins and I one of mine. Most of the fights didn’t last long, although one lasted more than 20 minutes. In every case...

From my local BKA FB page

I can think of a couple circumstances when removing queen cells would be beneficial...maybe to the beekeeper more than to the bees? The cell building colony with emergency queen cells on grafting day. The colony in the process of being requeened that has emergency queen cells when the beekeeper...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Cedar Waxwings love shad berries and my cell building yard is full of Shad. All summer the nasal whistling from the birds keeps me company.

What's flowering as forage in your area

:ROFLMAO: Sorry. It's a shrub or small tree. First blossoms seen in hedgerows. It's blooming today...the season is moving right along. https://www.chesapeakebay.net/discover/field-guide/entry/shadbush

    Introducing a New Queen

They have emerging brood? You're sure they're queenless? No virgin? Do you have a comb of emerging brood you can give them? Give them a frame of emerging... I would absolutely us a push-in cage.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Silver Maple gone but Red is still blooming. Sugar Maple soon. Daffodils in full bloom and awesome this year. ***** Willow still going. No dandelion yet. No Shad yet...when you see Shad blossoms, and you pollinate apples, it's time to work overtime if the bees aren't ready yet. Been cold here...

    oxalic/glycerin strips

First, last summer Vermont legalized the use of OA/GLY pads. Recently the USFDA has withdrawn the use. So be it. Anyway... I used OA/GLY pads last summer. I did see some control on varroa population growth. I think it most useful in conjunction with other treatments. I added pads in early...

    Mass Shootings

Come on. We're all so tired of this. Day after day another one. There have been 140+ mass shootings in America, so far this year. More shootings than days in 2023. They say it's not the guns that kill people but the crazies who do it. Do you think they want to help folks who are in trouble...

Varroa aggregate on young drones, IN PREFERENCE to nurse bees

To me, the important part is how many bees one mite can bite and infect. Mites don't ride around on a young bee for a few days before they enter another brood cell. Rather, they move around from bee to bee, infecting many bees.

    What's wrong with my hive?

If you would examine the dead brood...do you see the pupae ready to emerge when they died? Carefully dig some out with a pocket knife or the like. What do they look like? I believe you will find adult pupae with shriveled wings, and/or adult pupae with flat, stunted abdomens. This really is a...

Never do an inspection on April 1st!

Can you believe it? It was 64˚F here today. Still have snow up here on the hill. Put sub on the home yard. Would have gone out to my apiaries but I had a zoom to do today. Good speakers. Seeley, Tew, Flottum, and a bunch of others. Spoke about my Brood Factories...come to the National in...

    Queen marking

Marking queens is important in my operation. I need to know if the queen I installed is the queen that is now present. I also sell many hundreds of queens each summer and I want my customers to know their new queens are from my own breeding program. I don't like the paint pens. They leak. They...

    AFB Vaccine

Amen to that. Something new here really. Never saw EFB until a few years ago. Haven’t bought in bees or queens in a very long time. I’ve now got migratory apiaries around me…you just can’t place 2 million hives in almonds without issues down the road when they go home.

    Propolis Query

Easy enough to make a tincture. I have some I use for removing warts and healing infected cuts. Works well at both. I fill a quart jar with propolis chunks. Pure propolis, not hive scrapings. Add the strongest ethanol you can find. We have something called Ever Clear. 92% Ethanol. Cover the...

    Weight of my DB hives

Losses from what Robin? Colony has to be weak to get robbed. Our varroa/virus problem is getting worse every year. Was that it?
