Double Brood Box or Brood Box & Super?

Does anyone use national brood boxes, exclusively? Brood and a half is somewhat infuriating, as it limits what comb you can move about. I quite like the rose hive method, with one size box. Downside is availability of rose boxes, really not keen on the thorne plywood ones. Half toying with...

    Swarm control with nuc box

My question stems from a colony I inspected yesterday, 6-7 queen cells, polished inside but not charged, and no eggs in the QCs that I could see. My plan at the time was to nuc the queen, but I could not for the life of me find her... It's a poly hive, brood and a half with one super on. As the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

How are you finding no queen excluder? I run most of mine the same way too. I think once they've got an arc of honey across the top of the brood nest, they seem reluctant to take the queen past it anyway.

    New suit needed

After sales care is really good with BBwear... They can patch and fix bits for you if needed, might be an option rather than buying new? I just got a deluxe suit from them, couldn't be happier with it, compared the raggedy old thing I was wearing!

    DCA’s do they exist?

Have a read of the Apiarist blog above, and the radar tracking of individual drones.

    DCA’s do they exist?

Reminds me... I should add the dowsing rods to my swarm collecting kit ;)

    DCA’s do they exist?

Funnily enough, I was reading about this yesterday on the excellent Apiarist blog: Radar love - The Apiarist

    Keeping supers on all year

Does storing supers wet make them less susceptible to wax moth?

Quiz what's going on with the frames.

Thanks for posting the pictures, I certainly wasn't sure what it was, but good to know for future reference.

    Looking for out apiary

If you're on facebook, see if you can find a local community/village page to ask. I did similar and was spoilt for choice with offers from farmers/land owners will to have hives on their land.

    Bees chucking out brood?

Hopefully the 'average' beekeeper doesn't run into a negative number of colonies either :laughing-smiley-004

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Cedar, with some cork insulation on the outside.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

So mild down south today. Lots of bees flying and even bringing in pollen for an hour or two

    Bee friendly insecticide

From the BBKA website: https://www.bbka.org.uk/the-history-of-the-british-beekeepers-association So I guess the answer is probably still yes, even if not an official endorsement?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Is the ivy having a good year this year? Only my second year beekeeping, so not got much to compare to. Last night the two hives in the garden here were humming like AC units and there's a strong smell of ivy in the air, and bees piling in pollen through the day.

    Your highlights of the season.

Messy! :laughing-smiley-004 Extracting was all done in my kitchen, including the association apiary hives. Domestic harmony only just about maintained!

Do I need Oxalic acid treatment for bees in December?

Perhaps a quick change of subject is in order? .... I see this month's BBKA News mentions matchsticks under the crownboard again :laughing-smiley-004

    Newbee shopping list

Plastic/plastic based products are not inherently bad. Plastic is a fantastic material, it is our single use mentality and the economics of recycling that are the real issue. I would hazard a guess that the plastic takeaway containers you throw away that end up in landfill will be far more...
