    Honey and vitamins

If they mentioned Bakers honey in the ingredients it falls under compound foodstuff so honey could be used in the trade name but.. seeing as the ingredients are Pure wildflower honey (from the UK and Europe) with a load of added stuff, no they can't call this honey. So yeah, illegal to call...

    Honey and vitamins

Agreed, mentioned bakers honey as this can be used as compound foodstuff and called honey and listed in ingredients. (6) Where baker’s honey is used as an ingredient in a compound foodstuff, the product name “honey” may be used, in trade, in the product name of the compound foodstuff instead of...

    Honey and vitamins

Thanks for the link. Quick read: so their jar label should read *Bakers Honey* and it should state *intended for cooking only* ? If the bulk of the product is bakers honey, can this crap be classed as a compound foodstuff ? Baker’s honey 15.—(1) A person trading in baker’s honey must use the...

    Hive deaths

How old were the queens? - I've seen stocks re-queen late in the year and the lack of winter bees ends in doom. I've an apidea (with 2nd brood box) doing just fine sat in the garden with zero insulation, it was -12 here a few weeks back. Healthy bees are hard as nails.

    Cautiously optimistic newbie!

Only issue with bait hives and swarms are all the issues that come with them, not a great start for a new-bee. Had some real horrors move into empty kit this year without my permission.

    Refusing Syrup so Fondant?

All the stocks are strong double brood (in most cases) and the fondant will melt, it'll melt in the strong nucs too. Also full poly units so assume a bit warmer and wetter than your wooden boxes?. Half a block is only a couple of super frames (DN4) of food and both will fit under a standard...

    Refusing Syrup so Fondant?

Not seen that yet, as the total face of these slabs is exposed to the bees they tend to attack it and take it down fast (if they like). Also makes sure they can all get at the feed if clustered and away from the cuts in the bag. I have (sadly) killed a few hives as the fondant melted over the bees.

    Refusing Syrup so Fondant?

To save time, I take a 12.5kg block, cut it in two and place on the QX over frames. No rolling/wrapping or scoring and the bees have access over the entire hive. Bees also take offence to cling film and drag it into the hive, on the nucs they push to through the entrance and they can become...

    Refusing Syrup so Fondant?

^^ Stick a QX on top of the frames (you might?) as the fondant can melt and kill the bees (and cause a real mess).

    Refusing Syrup so Fondant?

Simple/Fast, less wasp/robbing risk less time suction. I've fed about half a ton, later than September (due to weather shift) and Ivy. For me, 12kg block, cut in half and placed on top of a QX. Either used poly CB's that have space, a poly feeder or empty brood box (I only use single size...

Vaping from above / through the crownboard

As a test (just to see) I lifted the roof/CB off a hive that had an empty brood box (used as feeding fondant slabs) few minutes after injecting 2.5g through the entrance, clouds of vapour poured out the top. In fact I could just about see the blue fondant bag. Can cover a site of 30 units in...
