Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

Bad words - Is the thread not about his posts. Will have a proper read, interesting stuff but personally I've seen good results from a range of Queen sizes. I'm more interested in the drones (the queen side is the easy(er) bit). It'll be great to read how you get on from your testing, look...

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

Interesting post, some of my monster (egg capacity) queens are small, some large (most standard) all differ. I doubt the genetic process (passing of data) changes and most of the important information comes from drones anyway. His posts are great but there are errors Demaree etc (this might...

    Honey price 2024

After being invited to a local outlet (waste of time) that is selling the above *farmers* honey, turns out their B2B price is £4.50 12oz jar. Seems pointless and surely better off just selling bulk @ £3.50lb. Taking into account; sticking in jars/labels/delivery/time/fuel/agro - after accounting...

Raising Bigger Queens. With thanks to the Apiarist

I graft into the Nicot cup (attached to yellow holder) then push those into the brown sockets. Saves messing about with a frame and rotating (super fast).

    Brood in new super?

I've several Queens/bees in nucs taken from stocks that were building cells, they are next to or not far from the original hive. All doing 100% fine (y). Also stops the spread of anything nasty lurking (as a bonus).

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thanks, i'll write something up in the Queen/rearing section. Essentially a drone flight cage (exercise) that sits on top of a hive, all part of the Instrumental Insemination(II) setup -

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Looking forward to seeing this lot (not all) flying around my new flight cage.

Morning, thanks for the reply. I'm sure at some point it clicks and they realise there is little point in hunting down the queen each visit. I would argue they may well need to inspect in minute detail. They could be currently battling EFB or be surrounded by hives festering away, in that case...

As a professional you can fix any issues you find (earlier the better) and certainly not doomed. Missing queens are easy to spot (drones/bee behaviour) replaced with a bank of winter queens in quads. Small stocks, combined and queen stored or destroyed (dependant on xyz) or balanced* with the...

Fiddling is the the word I see bandied around, unless the weather is in the extreme they can be opened and issues rectified quickly without issue. Hefting can catch you out, good example being poly nucs and mixed kit. They can feel fine but actually contain 6 frames of capped brood and rammed...

To be very clear - Quick check of the outer frames is all that is needed to check food, full inspections if anything catches your eye (i'd added overwintered queens 6+ weeks ago to drone layers or Q- stocks) that were strong and would have perished. Unsure regards luck, i've tons of stocks...

One of reasons people need to stop posting tons of messages (over the past months) regards checking/fiddling with bees too early and waiting till they become a box of dead bees or full of swarm cells. Better to check from March onwards by opening the stocks than leaving them to die rather than...

    Is beekeeping getting harder?

Farming has and always will be hard, all of the successful farmers I know are extremely skilled and intelligent business folk (like most sectors).
