Something I've never seen mentioned here or elsewhere is the problem of bee poo raining down on a wide area around the hives.
My hives are 50m away from the house but the windows (and anything around)are continually dotted with orange waxy blobs that are difficult for the window cleaner to...
I vape from below and crack the cover board slightly open to create a chimney effect and wait until vapour comes out of the top. Then you know it's well dispersed.
Well done. I advertised on Facebook marketplace 8 weeks ago but not had a single enquiry. But other local beekeepers are also advertising for £5/12oz and £5.50/1lb.
I use 9 too for similar reasons. It's obvious that with less woodwork in the box, the bees pack more honey into the space as the spacings between frames are just the same.
Clipping is a swarm prevention technique if you can monitor your bees regularly e.g. if they're in your garden. Then you can gain a few days if a QC is missed and the potential loss of a swarm is delayed and you can recover the clipped queen.
Nobody said that, but I wouldn't want you to feel excluded if that's what you feel you are.
The BBC is not perfect, like anyone else, but at least it tries to be balanced unlike most other sources that have no such mandate.
So many people don't like balanced reporting from the BBC or anyone else if it doesn't fit in with their own prejudicies. They prefer to stick to their own biased outlets such as the Daily Mail or, even worse, social media and sites spouting conspiracy theories.
On Saturday at 8.30pm, I passed a large willow tree nearby that was humming with honey bees yet couldn't see any flowers that they were attracted to, but they were all over it apparently on the leaves.
I've never seen the point of those spindly wooden legs for stands; over-complicated and such a small footprint for all that weight. Concrete blocks (lightweight or other) are far easier and sturdier.
I've had a colourful sign at the gate for 2 years and live very near to a caravan site which has a constant change of holidaymakers but have only sold a couple of jars at the door at £5/12oz in all that time. Scratching my head to to know how to improve that.
