    Double crown board boards

As I recall the sawdust etc was offered to the hives sewn inside hessian. In fact many colonies had a hessian cover on the top bars esp in double wall units and notably the Glens. It's worrying now that I am reminding people of the history, shows I am getting on. I knew a man who personally...

    Early swarming

The only way to give a real indicator of strength is how many frames of brood are there? I just realised you may well have drones given your location a thousand miles or so South of me. The only way to tell is to look and using a doubler brood box may well help as well. PH

    Best time to add Patties

So years ago I fed pollen patties. That is actual proper real pollen not sub. My mentor (300 colonies) said one year I'm not going to bother this year and see the odds so I did too. Well I sort of had to as I got my pollen from him. End result? IT MADE NO ODDS. Actually that's a lie, it did...

    Concrete beehive

There was a concrete hive at Craibstone which was "invented" in the 1950's when the material was fashionable and people were experimenting, dams and houses and so on. Total and complete failure as a bee house. Nosema was rampant and despite considerable expertise being applied colonies just...

    Buying a table saw

I spend quite some time over Xmas watching YT due to hand ops. What I learned and have put into practice is this. If you do nothing else put an extension on your mitre slide. It's a massive instant improvement and when setting 45Degrees use a triangle. They are not that expensive but they...

    Add fondant, or stop fussing?!

If the hive tool is used properly in spring to GIVE the bees room my over feeding, if it is even, such has no effect at all on constricting the space available. I work my brood nests some thing apparently frowned on by many. Goodness knows why, as by bruising and turning frames the brood can be...

    Add fondant, or stop fussing?!

I checked my fondant yesterday and added some to most of the nucs. Frankly I am not bothered if they have loads of stores or not I want to know they have accessible stores. My hive tool sorts out any stores congestion when they get active.

    Best time to add Patties

I gave up feeding pollen patties, as in real pollen, many years ago and it made absolutely no difference at all. A complete waste of money and time. PH

    New colony movement advice

If I were doing it (and I have) as said move as gently as possible and frankly any "builders barrow" will work as a hive barrow, I used one, said builders barrow to move many colonies to and from the heather but back to your issue. Yes move them then prop a board or some branches over the...

    New colony movement advice

Would you move house in mid winter stark naked? So yes weather plays a part, actually a massive part in beekeeping so to be good to your bees please don't even think of transferring them until the weather has really warmed up so say late March early April. Yes you can move them any time they are...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

While I was laid up work wise with my recovery from the carpal tunnel op I did some YT watching. so apart from total jealousy at the enormous garage workshops with 100K of tooling I did actually learn a couple of things which I have put into practice. I have a small 8" table saw a sort of...

    Making an observation hive

typo I meant bee space not brood space. Dabos I was talking about an unheated space you are talking about a house though houses also have areas not heated esp nowadays. Two quite different things. The point being that for an ob colony to not only survive but also thrive they need to be at the...

    Making an observation hive

If you are going the single frame route and frankly an ob with double or treble frames is a waste of time as the queen will pretty much always be out of sight. The problem with the single frame is it is very difficult for the bees to maintain brood temperatures so when not being looked at it...

    Rodent damage

Beebe if it helps yeas ago I know a pest controller and he told me that he was called to a chicken farm. There were "basements" below the bird sheds and down there he found the very expensive sachets of poison the farmer had invested in neatly stacked up for a rainy day.... Some years ago we...

    Rodent damage

When using traps it pays to chain them to a log or something solid as if you get a partial catch and they are still mobile they and trap will vanish. PH
