    No queen seen?

The OP said: With 11 frames in use, I put a super on. NO. Not the way to work thing out at all. AT 2pm the 11 may well have been covered but at 2am I will bet the farm they were not, far far from it in fact. So they are huddling together to keep the brood warm at 34C and you add 50% more...

    Simon the Beekeeper take over??

Someone I know is placing an order with the company yet I understood it was closed? Has it been taken over or is she being scammed? PH

    Queenless Cell Starter

My top tips are forget anything from across the pond as the conditions are totally different to ours. I raised hundreds of queens using a queenless starter box which after three rounds of cell starting was given a cell to make them a nuc. So no wastage. Unless you need dozens of queens why...

Winter nuc into a full hive- when?

I would be looking to hive them when they have three good frames of brood and have made a good start laying up the 4th one. I am just to the North of you. Forget dates it's all about knowing the strength of the colony, and the only way to know that is to know the number and size of the frames...

Where to put the entrance hole in a nuc-box?

I have some old as in 20 odd years old 5 frame poly nucs and some are short end and some long side openings and it don't make any odds at all. KISS PH

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Ok, so let's look at it another way. The task is to apply pressure whilst keeping the project square. So pressure can be applied by using two or three Spanset straps, and to keep it square make a "X" with pointed ends so as to accurately fit the corners and bobs.... Say a 9mm plywood square for...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I was watching this last night and it might work for you? Who needs actual sash clamps for a start? I made a door using the two active parts of a clamp and a board as the connector. In the vid the guy says using pipe...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

In my experience one queen will dominate due I suspect to a more powerful pheromone. PH

    Labeling....

Dani the guy sells chutneys and so on but nothing on the site mentioned a weight, not just the honey but all that I could see was just "weightless" so to speak. Very odd actually never seen anything like it before unless I was missing something really obvious. *shrug* PH

    Labeling....

I came across a site that is trying to become the UK version of Etsy. Fair enough. I then, as you do, looked for honey and on page 2 of the search results there was some. Not made by the seller but county honey. This vendor has no weights on any of the labels that I can see. So how can anyone...

    top or bottom?

Smarty? I have moved bees dozens of times from one frame size to another and always put the new box on top. Why? Queens like to go up. It's that simple so... KISS. PH

    Careful with that knife, Eugene

A friend of ours got into a serious mess and left us abruptly. Every room in the house has his touch in it. So every day I find I spend time contemplating the waste and pain. Not a topic to take lightly and yes there is help out there but for some it is not enough sadly. Back to topic. I have...

Is it too early to do a bailey comb change?

Given that the vast majority of your bees are still Winter Bees then NO. We have yet to pass the crossover point of hatching outnumbering deaths. A full Lang brood of honey will weigh some 60-80 pounds ish. Think of your back. PH

    SMIF

Not fed. What precisely? I know the implication is sugar but sheesh does that really matter? The precious people won't eat honey anyway. So I see a nuc that is struggling a bit and give them a stores comb. Did I not just fed them? ROFL PH

Beginner Split Planning - 1 Hive

You are not saying at what point of strength (always judged by frames of brood note) you are starting this idea at. Nor giving your location which would help as to how to advise. I would certainly add the 2nd brood but under not on top and run it until you have at least 18 frames of brood and...

Which frames and how many to use in a swarm trap?

FWIW. My bait boxes have usually been 5 frame nucs and they have been reasonably successful. I put in one old frame, the rest foundation and add lemon grass oil. I have also used full boxes often not deliberately but stacks of spare kit which often pick up the odd swarm. All of this I add on the...

    Cut Comb frame.

Spacing is simplified with Manley side bars which are.... 1.5". I use a cake slice and a medium kitchen knife to cut with. I have a stainless steel tray which I cut the comb out of the frame on and then place a plywood template on the comg to cut around. I have a strong polythene box I wipe the...

    Cut Comb frame.

In my thoughts it's pretty simple anything that adds extra work to the colony may add stress. Seems logical to me that offering foundation is less work for the bees than no foundation. Just my thoughts/gut feeling. PH
