Chart of hive sizes, number of cells and number of frames

I have lost mine in a drive crash so has anyone got one handy please? PH

    Double-check my reasoning

To say that places in the world manage fine in colder weather than us is misleading. We ask our bees to overwinter in a damp wet Marine climate not a lovely cold dry one. Huge difference. PH

Removing Winter insulation and unblock roof ventilation

The OMF was never developed to counter varroa as the longer time served members should know. I've posted this times. Mobus did the research at Craibstone and published in the ABJ. The OMF was developed to improve wintering and was coupled with top insulation which was proven to improve winter...

    Propolis remover

I tried Elbow Grease spray this morning and it took off 99% pretty much no bother at all. PH

    “Indian” Summer next week?

It kicked me every turn. Spring... *hollow laugh* Cold and wet for weeks and weeks. Bees refused to expand. Then the heatwave for two weeks and everything burnt off. Then "summer" *cry of despair* rain and rain and lets not forget the cloud bursts. The tattie planting crew had to abandon one...

    “Indian” Summer next week?

I took my last supers off today. Final insult from the worst season ever, one frame of extractable honey from 6 supers. ONE. Pissed off PH

    Smoker for Food.

So my wife suggested that instead of presents to each other for this year and next we buy a Weber kettle BBQ. So we did and a few nice extras like the wifi temp probes and so on. She then went on a smoking course held by Weber in Edinburgh and very informative it was too she said. She came back...

If you unite hives do you ever end up with 2 laying queens?

Always... no such word in the beekeeping world. Bees do nothing invariably though is safe to say. PH

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

If I had tried that this year it would have been another disaster. What a hopeless season. I built myself a new warmer. I upcycled the STC1000 but bought a new heater. I also discovered the joys of pocket hole joints. A complete game changer. The jig cost me £35 from Rutlands and provided the...

Correct way to nadir brood box

Op amd Beemum. I over winter on double broods and most over winter in the top box and to prove that bees do nothing invariably at least two or three of ten will choose the bottom box. Also being poly units they will ALL choose a corner to cluster in as the corners are the warmest places to be. PH

    Moving hive

After the move loosely stuff grass in the entrance so they have a wee struggle to get out and also put a board or branches over the entrance. BUT most importantly do not think of moving them with out a top screen ventilation. PH

    Badgers and Bees.

Ok so I'll try here. After 6 years of knowing badgers were in the area though some 500m away afaik, but now with very dry conditions my apiary has been raided and brood combs stored for swarm control consumed. I see various people talking about electric fencing but no details. Info please. PH

    Badgers

I knew there was a set not so far away but in 6 years on site not a problem at all. The last three days a stack of brood boxes has been toppled. I thought they has slipped but today there are empty combs on the other side of the fence so obviously moved and eaten. I suspect the dry conditions...

    Marking the queen

Please be aware that the COT device can easily dissect a queen for you. I was told a long time ago to practice catching drones by the wing. Then learn to mark them but to FIRST dab the marker pen or wipe the brush so that its ready to just put a dot on. Either use a different colour for the...

    Wired foundation moving during inspection

Could it be as simple as this..... The pins are not nailed into the wedge AND through the three wire loops? There are three big loops and three small loops in foundation, or at least mine have it and always have. The big loops are bent at right angles to tuck them neatly against the right angle...

    Abelo rebate?

I am yes as Abelo gave me the ID and OD dimensions but not the damn rebate, the critical element. PH

    Abelo rebate?

Many thanks. Crown boards and clearer boards for a beginner. PH

    Abelo rebate?

I am to make some parts for one of these hives but have never actually seen one. What are the dimensions of the rebate if anyone has one to measure? PH

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

This is very simple to sort out and needs one bit of kit. A board the same size or larger than the BB the bees are in. Put the board on the BB (when they are up to a good 8 frames of brood as this is a big move for them, cut a largish hole so the bees have plenty of access up and put the BB of...
