    Bees in a tree

Nothing yet. They reported back to the council, who sent an "expert" who banned them from going near them. The split in the tree is approx 2 mtrs long. The metal railings/fence is 1.25 mtrs high and borders a footpath..

God I love growing our own

The only pest that digs up my spuds are rats, I hate the things. They also took a lot of my peas in past years. I have convinced the pigeon fanciers in the adjoining plot to take the scrapings from the cot to he rubbish dump

    Heather honey 2022?

The heather between Maerdy and Ferndale ( Rhondda Fach), is looking good. My hives are about a mile from it, but I get very little honey from it.

God I love growing our own

Not many Bullfinches around here. I think it was caused by a nasty squall (wind and rain) that passed through, and it was "funnelled" around the house next to the allotment, the beans are close to the corner of the house. It happened overnight.

God I love growing our own

I spray my beans most evenings with water to encourage the flowers to set.. Last Sunday went up the allotment in the PM to find that a load of the bean flowers had dropped off. Filled 3 large buckets with them.. So disapointed.

    12 volt fan for polytunnel

Thank you for your reply and information.. Found it interesting . Will have to acquier a larger solar panel, and like you, will use it to drive the fans directly. Thinking about it, it would be better to have the fans running when the sun is shining.. Were the fans pre-used ones?/ Cheers...

    Refractometer

The advice/instructions with the 2 (different make) refractometers I have recommend they are kept with the honey for 24 hours, so that they are both at the same temp.

    Clover 22

Just behind my house there is a large area of what was a colliery waste tip, it has been flattened and has now been converted into a rugby field and a large cricket field, they sowed it with a seed mix with a high percentage of clover... Unfortunatly, the local council groundwork team cut/mows...

    12 volt fan for polytunnel

Thank you roche.. I have done all the maths. My system works on a timer, and today I have been monitoring the output from the solar panel.. Looks like I'll have to buy in a higher capacity battery. The poly is in a very sheltered position so the heat builds up quickly in it, so a "blow" fan is a...

    12 volt fan for polytunnel

I have looked into them, Graham, bought one last year to vent hot air from the poly. Unfortunately they use a lot of current (amps), my storage battery is a Halfords HLB678 70Ah, which is charged by a 100 watt solar panel, the fan consumes 7.5 amps.. So if it is cloudy the battery runs low...

    Upping the ante

Yes. This year I bought my usual compost from a large retailer.. It was rubbish.. most of the seeds I planted either failed to germinate, or wilted and died after germination.. Had to reorder tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, cucumbers, runner beans, broad beans etc. So my seed bill for this...

    Solar Panel Storage Batteries

"They" are the local council Planning department. The "overseeing"/responsibilty for the old colliery sites and colliery spoil tips was awarded to the local councils/authorities in Wales. Communicating with them is like talking to a brick wall, it is easier for them to say NO than look into/at...
