    Brown crab apple flesh

When I was stationed at RAF Locking, Weston super Mare, one of my jaunts to earn a bit more money was picking/gathering cider apples. One of my favourite farms was between Banwell and Winscombe.. Lovely farming family, always a good meal laid on. Plus they had 2 delightful daughters ( cough...

What paint/sealer do you use for cosies?

Was looking to get some Thompson Roofseal for the Kingspan cosies I have made, as recommended on here.. But looking at the specs for the stuff it sais that the 2.5ltr containers are "Low odour" but the 4 ltr are "High odour" A bit confusing as they are being sold as the same product...

God I love growing our own

What variety of garlic do you grow? An old RAF mate of mine who lives on the Isle of Wight sent me a couple of bulbs 8 years ago and I've kept back some bulbs every year.. They are a "stiff neck" type.

God I love growing our own

Same with me.. My compost heap is 8 feet square, 7 feet high. I sprinkle some blood-fish-bone and chicken manure on it (in layers) to speed up "fermentation".. From November on I usually add 5/6 trailer loads spaced approx 2/3 weeks apart and keep it covered with old carpets.

God I love growing our own

I have been getting my stable manure from a guy "up the road" from me, but over the past 3 years it has contained a load of nettle seeds.. This past year I have located a new source which is in a secure area, so I can leave my 2 cubic metre trailer there and they will empty the stable muck...

God I love growing our own

I had terrible problems with red spider mites. I tried 2 types of "predators" to control them... AMBLYSEIUS ANDERSONI, which work at high and low temperatures ( found these were good).. and PHYTOSEIOLUS, which work better at high temperatures... There is also a fungus available, BEAUVERIA...

It's been a Carp year for me

Thank you Graham.. I will be in touch. I think my problem has been caused because the only brood and bees I have to make up the nucs are the local Feral beasts.. As you know they are not a very nice bee to work with. I was planning to make up 3 colonies from the new Qs, overwinter them and...

It's been a Carp year for me

Yes, Queens cost me £48 x2 and £55 x 3, the nuc cost £250, and it cost me £50 in fuel to collect it. keeping bees is a hobby for me, what honey I collect usually covers my expenses..

It's been a Carp year for me

Hi Goran, Thanks for your comments. Unfortunatley the local bees are not very nice, they are rather feisty/defencive, and can be aggresive. I usually replace my queens every other year. Buckfast are deffinately out of the equation locally, I have had some very bad experiances with them.. The...

It's been a Carp year for me

I went into winter last year with 2 very strong hives and 2 "medium" sized.. Came out of winter with one strong hive, the other strong hive had tried to supercede, but the new Q had not mated ( she was running about in the hive), this hive died out. Hive 3 had no Q and hive 4 Q was present but...

Cheap insulation in S Wales to make hive cosies

I've been looking around for some polyurethane sheets to make cosies for my hives. I have found a supplier in Caerphilly that supplies "seconds" at a very reasonable price. I bought 1200mm x 450mm x 50mm for £13 a sheet.. They stock a good range of sizes.. Insulation South Wales.. I have no...

    Something eating my veg

The only deer around here are the "old dears" I give my spare veg too... Strangely, the wee beasties are also attacking the rhubarb leaves. I have never seen this before, I thought the leaves are toxic.

    Something eating my veg

It started with just holes in the leaves, 2 days later the beetroot was stripped,, so, yes, could have been wood pigeons, although I have not seen any around the allotment for some time.
