God I love growing our own

Funnily they and Sungold are the only thing I've grown in recent years. I've just gone 100% Sungold this time. The reds look smaller and pretty but to my mind more acidic. I could just stand in a greenhouse and graze Sungold all day. I've grown spares for friends and family too and everyone who...

Recipe for beeswax coating for fruit and veg.

Top tip. I've a teeny freezer and loads of rhubarb so I'll give this a go. Thank you.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Got my bait hive into its tried and tested position. I so wanted it on top of our wooden pergola but grumpy wouldn't let me lol. There's always next year!

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Would anyone know if this is the method used in Norway? I've "cousins of cousins" there who bee farm along with raspberry growing - they posted instagram footage of frames being made up with wires and seemingly a battery being used. I couldn't at the time work out what the method was!

    Further food fraud

I heard similar via Radio 4 a few days back. Didn't catch the start but there appears to be an analysis company here in N Ireland that is using reflected light with diamond to in some way create light profiles for lots of food. Was only half listening so didn't get the technique but they seem to...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's so true that there's a big difference between "want" and "need". My mum loved her childhoood in a thatched farm cottage with a well, an open fire and crane to cook largely homegrown food and the work dog lying at the hearth on the hard clay floor. (I think she glossed over the ice inside...

Happy New year fellow beekeepers. What are your aspirations?

Oh now... must remember that one lol.

Happy New year fellow beekeepers. What are your aspirations?

Thank you. The slope adds to the "fun" when carrying boxes about.

Happy New year fellow beekeepers. What are your aspirations?

Well that IS a silver lining lol. Thing is I've had to drastically reduce my home colony number so I'll have the other two apiaries I've set up trying it on. However to answer the original thread, I'm going to TRY and get my Demaree technique worked out this year (although modified Snelgrove at...

Happy New year fellow beekeepers. What are your aspirations?

Any time my lot head off, they veer south towards the Viburnum plicatum (a beautiful wedding cake viburnum) seen extreme right of the photo. They then select the exact branch each time to hang on which makes me wonder about residual pheromone. Unfortunately it's just above the path and exactly...

Happy New year fellow beekeepers. What are your aspirations?

This is why I love this forum so much. It's become my daily reading ANd amusement. Your stories (and photos) and the others above are superb and have really made me think and question what I'm doing. Keep them coming please. Thank you all!

    Let's share our garden setups

Garry, nope alas those shops all gone. The entire Ferbro buildings also gone this last year at the junction of Antrim and Ballyclare Rds (remember Walker & Ramsey toy emporium?) I was Ballyclare High then QUB geology PhD but ended up a biology teacher via palaeontology... long story)...

    Let's share our garden setups

Bless them. Thank you :) Ahem small world! I'm Glengormley right up on the back of the Belfast escarpment. It's now basically adjoining Mallusk with all the sprawl. Some of my bees hang out up near Hightown. It's home but can be a bit of a cold and windy place which seems to have its own...

    Let's share our garden setups

Isn't that just true! They drove me mad at times (and the timetabling didn't allow for the time required) but they just weren't suited to classrooms. The hoops I had to make them jump through to produce the file of paper to go with all the practical stuff was such a pain and largely ruined it...

    Let's share our garden setups

Oh thank you and that's such a shame re your parents. I had thought that my rather long garden would save me from causing annoyance but hmm yes I did get the neighbourhood bully at my door yelling that he was going to "environmental health" a few summers ago. It was incredibly rattling as he...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I actually have never made any but.... the smell from the garden centre ones WAS lovely so thst would be my one concession maybe. I'm getting a few people wanting some sort of scent for gift candles. Thus far I've resisted - as the recent discussion went, the silicone gets tainted it seems...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Aye well agreed, it's often not the actual oil price which grant you is small but the often crazy posting charges to N Ireland post-Brexit. Just thought I'd see if anyone had a fav then I WOULD suck up the postage.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

But the ones I've tried were far from "honey". Really bizarrely not like what I expected. Is there a specific brand that meets anyone's approval here please?
