    Making fondant/candy

I recently fed some nucs fondant, I got it cheap at last seasons pallet price and it also means nucs won’t get hammered splashing syrup about! However normally it’s only emergency so little is used. In my area I can often feed syrup into November and in Spring weather depending feed syrup in Feb...

    Managing uncapped frames in supers

For many years very few had refractometers…..if you shake the combs and it didn’t come out it’s good enough. I’d suggest once mixed in with capped honey you’re unlikely to have issues. Use your common sense..check the majority is capped, shake test the rest. Worked well for many for years!!!!!!!

    Queen rearing Advice

Yes they should have emerged but that pupae itself has not even coloured up and I’d suggest still a few days off emergence.

    Queen rearing Advice

That pupae looks healthy me and certainly not dead. Are all cells dead inc those going into mating nucs?…. Have you got your settings correct. Check your timings I count grafts as day 4 and put into a starter finisher I remove to nucs on day 14.

    Conversion from Brood-and-half to DBB?

If there’s brood in the half simply place under bb now, feed and treat as normal. In the spring bees should hopefully have vacated the super, I’ll also often reduce space on the first inspection if bees aren’t filling a bbl box but I’ll inspect early! Then as soon as needed add second brood.

    Split queen failed

Some queens do take longer to mate however I find if given reasonable weather for 2 weeks after emerging most are mated. Anything after this and your chances drop drastically! As above put a test frame in for a couple of days.

    Preparing for winter

Your 14x12 should provide more than ample food for a colony over winter. Saying that you will have to monitor and check and feed accordingly. Do not just feed as some do and walk away! Some colonies will burn through stores late on and this is easy to rectify during the active season.

    Heather predictions this year

I’ve just got a few packed up and ready to go……..managed to set off a great robbing frenzy😡. I suspect a few nucs will get hammered!!!

    Himalayan Balsam

Many years ago there was a fantastic amount around the river Wey it added to the Heather around Hankley common….Unfortunately it got stripped out by those lovely volunteers😉

    Himalayan Balsam

It will purely depend on quantity and indeed weather none of which we can advise you on. It certainly can provide a good flow and the last of it will finish with the ivy. I think the nectar is very light though but if there’s little else they will work it hard.

    uncapped brood situation

A few have mentioned wax moth…. I can’t see any in those frames!!!! They normally leave a trail/cocoon under capping that’s easily seen. Even if/when the bees remove it the resulting bald brood is in a trail or track. The tapping the frame does work and if no grub pops out they have often...
